How I Wear My: Lace

How I Wear My: Lace

For a “How I Wear My” post in February, how could Jill of Everything Just So and I lose with lace? And judging by its appearance in magazines and on runways lace is hot right now, but does it ever really go out of style?

Both the young and the not-so-young are embracing lace this season. I recruited two of my favorite teens to show us how they wear their lace.

My husband and I spent last weekend at the beach in the RV. We invited Tori, my 17-year-old stepdaughter and 18-year-old Veronica, Tori’s brother’s girlfriend, to come out and join us for lunch and photos on Saturday. They both wore lace just for this post.

Tori shows us her Forever 21 off-white lace dress…

And Veronica wears a rose-beige lace top from Forever 21.

That’s how the younger set does lace. Now for a more “mature” look…

I have very little lace in my wardrobe outside of undergarments. Last month, while buying new bras at a local boutique, I found this Hanky Panky lace camisole in white. It’s become a versatile layering piece that adds a touch of femininity, especially to my thrifted tuxedo jacket.

It was breezy out so I wore my hair in a new kind of side ponytail.

I had a wonderful time playing dress up with the girls at the beach. It was so kind of them to participate in our How I Wear My: Lace post.

A big thank you to my sweet and patient husband, Bill, for taking all of our many, many photos.

For March, won’t you take a look in your own closet and pull out something you just love, something you can’t imagine living without?

Jill and I are on a spending freeze for February (pinky swear!) and want to focus on things we already own so next month’s post will be “How I Wear My: Most Cherished Wardrobe Item.”

Send Jill or me a picture of yourself in the piece you treasure above all others and we will include you in our post on March 1!

Please visit Jill’s blog, Everything Just So,
to see how Jill and the other participants are wearing lace.

What a brilliant family you have, even better in lace, wowwwwwwwwwwww

  2. February 1, 2012 / 5:10 am

All of you look so beautiful! Happy too. Great pictures.

  3. February 1, 2012 / 5:43 am

Those girls are gorgeous. I have no lace! My daughter has 2 lacey scarves and I just picked up a bag on ebay with lace on it that I know I am going to steal really soon!

  4. February 1, 2012 / 5:51 am

Your pictures are stunning! I love the ones of the girls and the three of you walking along the waterline. Those deserve to be framed!! And you all look divine in your lace pieces.

  5. February 1, 2012 / 6:30 am

Oh my goodness, three beauties. I love your cami, it looks like it’s be so versatile. And of course your new hairstyle, sigh, so lovely!

  6. February 1, 2012 / 6:32 am

Yes, stunning photos! And Bill rocks. And btw, those mountains in the back look great, too!
Such a cool scenery you have close to your home. mmmh.

  7. February 1, 2012 / 6:34 am

Love all of you in lace, beautiful photos. And your lace camisole is perfection. Also, love your hair in the side ponytail.

  8. February 1, 2012 / 6:37 am

Hiya Adrienne, the three of you look beyond gorgeous. Yay for lace! I hope this inspires ladies to add some lace to their wardrobe. And I like the side ponytail, it’s so elegant-looking. XO, Jill

  9. February 1, 2012 / 7:27 am

I love this post! The joy of the moment comes right off the page! I will have to dig through the closet and see if there is any lace hidden there!

  10. February 1, 2012 / 7:57 am

I love those beach images. The girls look like they are having fun too.

I think you’ve got just the right amount of lace and it does add a feminine softness to your jeans. Dare I say French Chic?

I just discovered an antique lace scarf in a soft rose-beige that looks great with black navy, grey and taupe. I will wear it with something sort of tweedy or maybe suede. Thanks!

    PS Gorgeous pics

  12. February 1, 2012 / 9:12 am

@Juhli It was a happy weekend. I love how Tori and Veronica have become instant friends. Isn’t youth great in that way?

  13. February 1, 2012 / 10:39 am

Love these gorgeous shots! Everyone looks fabulous in lace. Love the way you styled your look and love the side pony.

  14. February 1, 2012 / 10:43 am

Love the lace and the side ponytail. I will have to try that. I also love the background. Beautiful beach scenery. xo

  15. February 1, 2012 / 10:45 am

I love all the photos. Gorgeous.

    Your hair looked so pretty.

    Bill is so nice.

  16. February 1, 2012 / 12:03 pm

All the ladies look great, but Tori is rocking a very Lauren Bush Lauren look! I love the very distinctive American pairing of white summer dress with a jean jacket. This is a look I plan to wear in Austin this spring and summer!

  17. February 1, 2012 / 1:02 pm

Everyone looks fab in their lace. The pictures are fantastic…compliments to the photographer. What a fun day for you all. I don’t think I have any lace in my wardrobe. Odd. For as much as I like the vintage look, one would think…xo Bliss

  18. February 1, 2012 / 2:21 pm

@Pam @ over50feeling40 You look stunning in your lace, Pam. It’s interesting to see how many different ways lace can be worn. Thank you so much for participating!

  19. February 1, 2012 / 2:23 pm

@Jodie (aka mummaducka) It’s fun to borrow things from the young women in our lives. Tori has some scarves and jewelry that I like to pinch every now and then. I can’t fit into most of her clothes – they are too young for me anyway. But the accessories are fun to borrow.

  20. February 1, 2012 / 2:33 pm

@déjà pseu I like that photo a lot, too. Tori and Veronica are such sweet and fun-loving young women. I have such a great time with them.

  21. February 1, 2012 / 2:39 pm

@Patti @ NotDeadYet Style I saw my hairdresser today for a fringe trim and even she was impressed by my pony!
I think I will be able to wear that cami often. It’s a great layering piece.

  22. February 1, 2012 / 2:41 pm

You and the girls all look so vibrant against the backdrop of the beach. I love how you combined a lace top, tuxedo jacket with rolled up jeans. Also that lip color looks great on you too.

  23. February 1, 2012 / 2:41 pm

@Paula We are so fortunate to have such a gorgeous beach nearby.

Bill has such a good disposition. Many men wouldn’t spend their day taking photos for a blog – unpaid. He is a good sport.

  24. February 1, 2012 / 2:42 pm

@kathy peck I have already worn my hair this way three times since seeing the video last week. It’s so easy and comfortable. Not fussy at all.

  25. February 1, 2012 / 2:44 pm

@jill815 As always, it’s been so fun working with you on our monthly series. I look forward to March…am scanning my wardrobe already for my most cherished piece! xo

  26. February 1, 2012 / 2:45 pm

Love your hair in the side do!

Again, really get verklempt with that relationship you have with Tori. All three of you were rockin that lace!

Bill is a patient man. No wonder he made Fire Chief!

  27. February 1, 2012 / 2:47 pm

@Marmie Thank you, Marmie. Lace is so popular right now and I think we’ll be seeing more of it as the spring months approach. I have a pair of lace stockings I have been playing around with. I haven’t worn them out yet, but I have tried them on. Not sure they are for me. Lace can sometimes look too young – and too old depending on the item and the person.

  28. February 1, 2012 / 2:51 pm

@Swissy That sounds beautiful, Swissy. I like the idea of rose-beige with grey, navy or taupe. Is it something you recently purchased or have you had it awhile and rediscovered it?

  29. February 1, 2012 / 2:52 pm

@life, in small chunks Thank you! I was worried it would be too bridal – white lace, you know. But I think the jeans and masculine tuxedo jacket prevented that from happening.

  30. February 1, 2012 / 2:55 pm

@what’s her bucket The side pony is so easy, you won’t believe it. I don’t know how long your hair is these days, but you may be able to make it into a side messy bun – keeping that heavy hair of yours off your neck during the hot months of summer.

Come up for a visit and we will go to the beach 🙂

  31. February 1, 2012 / 3:04 pm

@Rebekah Doesn’t Tori look stylish? That little denim jacket from F21 was about the best purchase she’s made. I sometimes wear it, too as my denim jacket is big and bulky (hmm, why am I holding on to it, then?)

  32. February 1, 2012 / 3:05 pm

What a lovely family. You all look beautiful in your lace. I love denim and lace paired together.

  33. February 1, 2012 / 3:17 pm

@steppingmywaytobliss That is very surprising, Bliss. I would think you would have some lace gloves or something at the very least. Maybe it’s not your thing. I only have a pair of stockings (that might be repurposed into something else – Halloween mask? Little sand bags?) and this camisole. It’s not really my thing either but it’s starting to grow on me.
    xo, A

  34. February 1, 2012 / 3:23 pm

@Blue Jeans Girl Thank you! I have two red lipsticks – one is Chanel and the other is drugstore brand, Rimmel. I look so much better in the Rimmel. The Chanel color is too orangey and I end up looking like my teeth are yellow.

The beach was so sunny and clear that day – weird for a January day. We lucked out!

  35. February 1, 2012 / 3:30 pm

@Julia I get choked up too when I sit down and really think about how lucky I am to have Tori in my life. She and her dad are very special people.

His official start date for Fire Chief is only two months away! Yikes! Things are about to change around here…good thing I have the blog and my volunteer work to keep me busy (and from nagging him and whining) while he works not one, but two jobs!

It will be a lot of work and more time apart, but it’s worth it. We are both so excited to get more involved in our community.

    xo, A

  36. February 1, 2012 / 3:39 pm

@Debbi@SheAccessorizesWell Denim and lace – yes, a great combination. I just realized all three of us are wearing denim and lace together (only took me all day!)
I want to try my lace top with some new black slacks for an evening look. Maybe on Valentine’s Day.

  37. February 1, 2012 / 4:21 pm

I love these photos and long for the beach. I love the simple lace shirt under your blazer. The lace makes the blazer seem more feminine.I will be checking our my closet for the March 1.

  38. February 1, 2012 / 4:28 pm

@Carrie Teal The lace does soften the masculine vibe of the jacket.

I do hope you’ll join us in March. Jill and I will be writing reminders on our blogs as we get closer to the date.

  39. February 1, 2012 / 4:38 pm

Adrienne! What was I thinking?? Clearly I was out of my mind for a moment. I have my totally ALL lace wiggle dress. How could I have forgotton that? xo MOI

  40. February 1, 2012 / 4:41 pm

@steppingmywaytobliss I was going to ask about that because I thought it was lace, but I figured I was just losing my mind…again. Thank you for telling me 🙂 xo

  41. February 1, 2012 / 5:42 pm

    Great pics Adrienne…as always!

I didn’t know Hanky Panky made camisoles…it looks great with your jacket. I found yours on Nordstrom’s website.

I dropped into a Goodwill today and they had the cutest sleeveless lace top, it was sort of vintage looking and the color was great for me. But it was not meant to be, if only it had been 3 inches longer!

  42. February 1, 2012 / 5:58 pm

what a beautiful and fun family photoshoot!
your daughters are gorgeous! I love those 2 pictures of you on the beach! You look great!! And, I’m going to do that side pony, it’s a fabulous style on you 🙂

  43. February 1, 2012 / 8:38 pm

Love you new Hanky Panky find, and the video was great for a couple new do’s 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    @Adrienne Shubin

Adrienne, I “dis-covered” (aka un-covered!) the lovely lace scarf amongst my lesser-used family heirloom scarves. I mightn’t have thought of browsing until your post. The scarf is handmade lace in a rose pattern and the soft shade is that of an heirloom rose. It looks great with my cocoa brown suede swing jacket. Merci encore.

  45. February 2, 2012 / 10:31 am

The girls are so pretty, they could be models. And you’re so funny referring to yourself as “mature.” You look as young as the girls.

Your lace top is very pretty with that jacket, and I love how you take a formal look to the beach of all places. Very California!

  46. February 2, 2012 / 5:16 pm

Bill did an amazing job with the photos and the setting is lovely. All three of you are wearing your lace well, but my favorite part of this post in the lovely side ponytail!

  47. February 2, 2012 / 7:39 pm

O loved the video and the post that was great!

  48. February 2, 2012 / 8:56 pm

@LRS4AMANDA I didn’t know they made camisoles either. They also make long sleeved tops. I was going to get that instead but I didn’t like any of the colors the boutique had in stock.

How did you like the Goodwill store in your area?
The whole ‘not long enough in the torso” thing is an ongoing issue with me. I can so relate. In fact, I had to go a size bigger in the Hanky cami because the smaller size was too short.

    xo, A

  49. February 2, 2012 / 8:57 pm

@Laura Thanks,Laura. Let me know if you try the pony. It’s so easy, you won’t believe it!

  50. February 2, 2012 / 9:04 pm

@Shauna Hi Shauna! I haven’t heard from you in ages! I hope you are well.

The video is a great find. I watch hairdo videos from time to time – but usually they are too complicated for me or too hard to do with my long hair. This one is actually doable!

  51. February 2, 2012 / 9:09 pm

@Swissy That’s lovely, Swissy! How wonderful that you uncovered such a treasure. It sounds like a beautiful scarf. Thank you for telling me about it.

  52. February 2, 2012 / 9:12 pm

@Susan Tiner Thank you, Susan. I do feel rather mature around teenagers…like a regular fuddy-duddy sometimes.

I didn’t used to take nice clothes to the beach with me…I blame it on the blog! 🙂

  53. February 2, 2012 / 9:15 pm

@Terri Bill has come a long way with his camera skills – practice, you know.

I love the side pony, too. It’s so easy, I wish I had discovered it years ago!

  54. February 3, 2012 / 6:24 am

One thing I have noticed about the 2 Goodwills in my area is that their pricing is very inconsistent. I’m thinking of looking at a nearby consignment store next. They are picky about what clothes they allow into the store and prices are only slightly higher.

  55. February 3, 2012 / 6:57 pm

I love it when you have pics of the family…you guys look so happy! You all look SO lovely in your lace and a nice photo of your hubby & dogs, too!

  56. February 5, 2012 / 7:33 am

    So pretty!

I just found your blog and WOW…I think it is going to have an impact on me. First, I love personal style blogs…have just discovered them this past year, and so many of them have inspired my own personal style improvements. I love the positive vibe and empowerment that radiates from so many of them.

While I was perusing your blog; I came across the “wheel of life” and also your post about not taking things others say to us personally. Your words struck me and I feel like I had one of Oprah’s A-ha moments. I can’t wait to spend a bit more time with your blog. And I will be downloading the book you talked about “The four agreements” on my Kindle asap!!!
