Positively Friday

Positively Friday

How can it possibly be Friday already? This week went by far too quickly for my liking.

It’s time to take stock of all the great things that happened during the last week.

~ I received a postcard this week from my dear reader/friend Barbara, who lives in Italy. She spent several weeks in August with her husband and young son in Paris. I am touched that she took the time to send a postcard out to me. I keep it on my bureau mirror in my bedroom.

The post card features Edith Piaf, my favorite chanteuse. I have “La Vie en Rose” as my ringtone and enjoyed reading her biography, No Regrets, last year. Thank you, Barbara! It’s so very thoughtful of you.

~ Kay, my life coach and very dear friend, was in town recently. We got together a couple of times and decided to work together again to help me achieve some of my goals. The coaching will be less intense than it was when I worked with her 10 years ago, but it’s still a challenge. Some goals I hope to reach include writing more often, exercising regularly, growing my blog and being healthier.

~ Since becoming accountable to Kay for working towards my goals, I began exercising daily. Today is day 12 of working out a minimum of 30 minutes per day and I feel great! My arms seem more toned, my energy level is higher, and I feel better about myself than I did when exercise was put on the back burner.

The best and most unexpected benefit is it’s catching! My husband is also exercising; sometimes with me and sometimes on his own.

~ Last weekend, Tori went to her school’s homecoming dance. Parents and kids met for photos before the dance. Bill took lots of pictures of Tori with her boyfriend and her many girlfriends. As we were saying goodbye, Tori asked her dad to take a quick photo of the two of us. I stood next to her as she pulled me close and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

Although I adore the photo, what really touches me is Tori’s reaction to it. She made it her cover photo on her Facebook wall, and she ordered a 5 x 7 photo yesterday so she can frame it. That girl really knows how to make someone feel special.

~ Having fallen hard for my new oxfords, I decided to add another pair to my wardrobe after I saw Heather show off her great black brogues earlier this week. I went to my favorite online shoe store, Zappos, to see what they have.

I bought this pair:

And this pair:

They should be here on Monday. Hopefully, one pair will work and I’ll send the other back. Shipping is free both ways with Zappos which is one of many reasons I shop there.

Are you planning on wearing oxfords this fall?

~ Finally, this didn’t happen during the last week but I am going to post it anyway because it makes me laugh.

Our friends, who we were with in Italy last May, just bought a new boat. Two weeks ago, we went to Tiburon, about an hour away, and spent the weekend with them celebrating. When it was time to return the boat to its slip, I got out the camera and started snapping away at all the seals, seagulls, and pelicans hanging out in the marina. This is my favorite shot of all the photos.

Doesn’t it look like the pelican is the teacher and all the little sea birds are students? Notice the unruly birds in the back of the “class” not paying attention.

What’s positive about your week? I’d love to know!

  1. September 28, 2012 / 8:50 am

Many positive things happened, but the thing I am most grateful for is that my Dad had a serious heart procedure yesterday, and he is alive and well today; everything else pales into insignificance 🙂

  2. September 28, 2012 / 8:52 am

I’m elated you finally received the postcard!! It took one month to reach Cali! I posted it exactly one month ago! I was starting to feel embarrassed about it not being delivered to you…I did not know Edith is your fave chanteuse, I was undecided between Mistinguett and la Mome but then I chose Edith because the image was much nicer, the slope and the view of the Tour Eiffel..and then I adore Belleville!!!
The pic of you and Tori is fabulous!!! The black brogues are really stylish, I’ve got two pairs of them one brown and the other patent, the brown ones are so old, maybe 25 yo but still perfect…

  3. September 28, 2012 / 9:55 am

I got a little choked up about Tori and that photo….so sweet!

Thank you for the mention and I hope on of your pairs will work perfectly for you.

That last photo with the pelican—PRICELESS. I love it.

Have a great weekend! xo H

  4. September 28, 2012 / 11:25 am

I love the pelican photo, and the one of you and Tori. That’s really nice.

I can’t embrace oxfords. What’s funny about it is that I remember having some in the 80s. I may change my mind, but right now, I don’t have a pair.

  5. September 28, 2012 / 12:32 pm

Both pairs of shoes rank high on my list of ‘would love to have’ items. I’ve been eating differently this year and my husband has followed through with a couple of changes in his eating habits as well… not a lot, but a couple. 🙂

  6. September 28, 2012 / 12:48 pm

I love the pelican picture! Your daughter, my goodness…so sweet. What’s been positive about my week? Let’s see…we returned Tuesday from an east coast vacation; I am still on vacation from work even though I needed to go in one day to take care of some pressing things; I bought a new coffee maker and new cannisters for the kitchen; and we are almost caught up with Homeland (Season 1), just in time for Season 2 which begins on Sunday! Have a great weekend Adrienne!

  7. September 28, 2012 / 2:25 pm

So many positive things, your post really made me smile! The picture of you and Tori is lovely and I think you can never have too many Oxfords (brogues we call them here) – a Autumn basic for me! Hope your weekend will be as positive as your week has been. Have a lovely weekend xo

  8. September 28, 2012 / 3:43 pm

Love that photo of Tori and you. She does sound like the nicest girl. You have been a dear to her too I’m sure.
Adrienne, so awesome you are doing exercise daily. I really need to too. Only doing about twice.

I’m not sure about the oxfords. I had them a ton of years ago in cream. I may need to come around to them. I’m sure I may change my mind when I see them on everyone in Fall. You know how it is when you’ve already worn a trend? Kind of feel the same about leggings..
    hope you have good weekend!
    p.s. Love the postcard!

  9. September 28, 2012 / 3:53 pm

The picture – and story – of you and Tori is so heart-touching, I got a lump in my throat.

Love your black oxfords, and I am a huge Zappos fan too! Have a wonderful weekend.

  10. September 28, 2012 / 5:27 pm

I love that photo. Those are my favorite kinds of photos that represent “real” moments. I just wanted to let you know I am trying in my posts to give a few positive things from my week, you inspired me. Girl you know I love my oxfords. I love both! I wear mine all the time! Have a great weekend.

  11. September 28, 2012 / 7:11 pm

Sounds like you are really making good things happen. Love the photo of you and Tori.

  12. September 29, 2012 / 4:12 am

Am in the process of losing weight and am almost to goal. Every week i feel great about that. Would you be willing to share your exersize routine? Thats my goal now…to work on getting fit. I really do NOT want that to be my new years resolution, again..haha. It may be an interesting blog post. I would enjoy it.
Am going ziplining today!!! With my oldest son and husband, who shared a birthday on the 28th! Midlife crisis? No way, just havin’ fun!

  13. Hey Sweet Girl,

I found it incredibly touching and so tender about Tori’s request. A very touching moment and I could see how it would touch your heart! Kudos to this beautiful young lady, may she be an excellent role model for teens on how to treat Mom, whether step or not! 🙂
P.S. Great picture of your man and of the Pelicans

  14. September 29, 2012 / 7:05 am

Love all the photos…especially the one of you and Tori. I have the exact pose with Tony and Amanda at our wedding when she was 8. How sweet Tori put the photo on her FB cover page.

So you spent the whole weekend on the boat? How wonderful.

My week started off on a sad note. My next door neighbor Mary and her daughter Carol moved to Portland. So sad to see them go after knowing them for 14 years. There were a lot of tears, but we are going to be in touch. They have insisted we come stay with them.

Yesterday however, was better…spent the day shopping with Amanda and we had a great lunch at a restaurant that recently opened. Our entire lunch was vegan and very tasty.

    Have a great weekend.

  15. September 29, 2012 / 9:35 am

So many neat things in your blog to comment on today.

The pelican is cool. Your hubby and your girl are a nice looking pair.

The oxfords….they’re just yummy. I like the first one’s best, but they’re both awesome. I saw Heather’s brogues too and that made me want a pair.

I do have a cute pair of bone colored brogues. I’ll have to wear them soon.

  16. September 29, 2012 / 4:46 pm

That photo of you and Tori is just so beautiful. I can understand why Tori is enamored with it.

  17. September 30, 2012 / 7:58 am

@Vannessa@Luxuria Oh dear! That is something to be grateful for. Happy to hear your dad is doing well. I hope he continues to improve and gets lots of rest.

  18. September 30, 2012 / 8:02 am

@lovesjetlag Edith Piaf was the perfect choice. I want to visit that very same street when we go to Paris next year. I will take along the postcard, or at least the address on it, and get some photos.
You’ll have to email me your address so I can send you a postcard from Paris too – shouldn’t take as long getting to Italy, though I have heard some not so great things about the Italian mail service.
I can hardly wait to get my brogues tomorrow! I hope on of the pairs works out for me. With my large size, I have less styles to choose from. These were the best of the bunch in my price range.
I have a pair of black granny boots that are almost 20 years old and I still love them. Aren’t really old shoes that are such great quality that they last and last the best?

  19. September 30, 2012 / 8:05 am

@vintagefrenchchicI hope one of the black oxfords works out for me…otherwise, the search will continue. I tried eBay and Etsy but came up dry.
I love the pelican and the Tori photos, too. Life is so much better when you have a camera to capture it.
    xo, A

  20. September 30, 2012 / 8:08 am

@Leigh Powell Hines I wore brogues in the late 80’s too. And when I saw that they were making a comeback, I figured I would pass on them like I did with the legging craze of the last couple of years (have not worn leggings even once since the 80’s). But they started to grow on me and I see my style evolving into being more preppy than it was in former years.
Maybe they will grow on you too??

  21. September 30, 2012 / 8:10 am

@Diane Cayton-Hakey That’s great news, even if they are small changes, they are still changes. It’s great how many spouses can influence each other to make healthy changes. Lead by example!

  22. September 30, 2012 / 8:50 am

@Old Married Lady Sounds like a fantastic week, Lina! I love New England – that’s where you went, right? I bet all those fall colors were a delight to see.
Gotta love new coffee makers and accessories.
And I have got to get Showtime and HBO so I can see all these great shows! I am missing out.

  23. September 30, 2012 / 8:51 am

@Mademoiselle Poirot So lovely to hear from you Mademoiselle!
I think I may be developing a “thing” for brogues and might even forgo the cognac riding boots purchase I was planning to make this fall in favor of more of them!
    Hope you are well!
    xo, A

  24. September 30, 2012 / 8:57 am

@Patti @ NotDeadYet Style Isn’t Zappos the best? I rarely buy shoes anywhere else.
Tori regularly puts a lump in my throat with all the nice things she does and says. She is such a sweetheart!

  25. September 30, 2012 / 9:03 am

@Carrie Teal Oh good! That is what I would love to see – lots of people blogging about all their positives. It’s really good for my state of mind to focus on the good stuff.
Oxfords are not only super duper cute, but comfortable as well. And classic! They really never fully go out of style.

  26. September 30, 2012 / 9:04 am

@La Vie Quotidienne Thank you, Adrienne….lots of good stuff happening around here. But the days go by so quickly anymore, I feel like I don’t have time to enjoy them!

  27. September 30, 2012 / 9:07 am

@hostess of the humble bungalow Tori brought home a few printed photos yesterday. I am keeping my copy on my mirror on top of the bedroom bureau so I can look at it – and the postcard from Barbara – every day!

  28. September 30, 2012 / 9:10 am

@catherine Congratulations, Catherine! That is such a big accomplishment. Losing weight is not easy, I know.

Ziplining sounds like a blast. A tiny bit scary but fun nonetheless. Maybe someday I will give it try.
I will do a post about my exercise routine later this week. It really is all over the map, but that’s what keeps me doing it – I get bored with exercise really easily.
Thanks for the post idea! And way to go on your weight loss!

  29. September 30, 2012 / 9:12 am

@Linda Burt Independent Willow House Design Consultant Thank you, Linda. I also hope Tori gives other teens motivation to treat their parents well.
That photo of Bill is my new favorite. He looks so European in his Ray Bans and jeans with flip flops.
And the pelicans were so fun to watch….what characters they are!

  30. September 30, 2012 / 9:16 am

    @LRS4AMANDA You do? How sweet?
We only spent one night on the boat, then the next night we slept at our friends’ gorgeous Tuscan villa overlooking the bay. It’s was like being back in Italy again. We took the boat over to Sausalito, Angel Island and finally dropped anchor in a quite cove and had snacks and a little wine while we watched pelicans and porpoises go by. It was a wonderful weekend.

So sorry about your dear friend moving. Maybe you can go to Portland to visit them? Portland is a great city.
Sounds like a fun day with Amanda…love that you too are so close.
    xo, A

  31. September 30, 2012 / 9:18 am

@Lisa Bone colored brogues sound very cute. I hope you’ll wear them sometime on your blog. I’d love to see how you style them!

  32. September 30, 2012 / 9:19 am

@Terri Thank you, Terri. I hope you’re healing nicely since your wrist injury.

  33. September 30, 2012 / 6:11 pm

I love that picture of you and Tori. You both look gorgeous (as usual) and it shows what a wonderful relationship you two have.

I also love your brogues. Now I want some!

Can’t wait for the Burgundy/Bordeaux post, it’s looking beautiful!

    XO, Jill

I adore Louis Armstrong and Madeleine Peyroux’s versions of “La Vie en Rose” – every time they come on Pandora, I experience a renewed sense of delight. I also love Peyroux’s “J’ai Deux Amours”. The photos of you with Tori and the sea birds with the pelican “teacher” both made me smile – Perfect for Positively Friday! And $8 for that dress?!? Exquisite!

I’ve been positively delighted with myself – with the exception of yesterday, I’ve written for at least an HOUR every day since Thursday, Sept. 13th! It’s a great accomplishment for me – I have the creative writing boot camp at the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta to thank for the proliferation of thoughts flowing so freely from my brain!
