How I Wear My: Plaid

It’s the season for plaid. Have you noticed it’s everywhere lately? December seems especially suited to plaid. Perhaps it’s because it pairs so well with black velvet.

Jill and I think it’s the ideal choice for this month’s “How I Wear My” post.

To start things off, my partner in “How I Wear My”, Jill, is looking ever so stylish and a bit 1980’s boy band – in a good way – in her plaid tie and black button-down. Visit Jill’s blog, Everything Just So, to get the full story on her look.

Gracey of Fashion for Giants, shows that bold stripes are often a great choice to pair with plaid. I like how the burgundy in the skirt ties in nicely with the burgundy sweater. Everything you see on Gracey is from Goodwill!

Bella of Citizen Rosebud is wearing a charming plaid skirt with tulle and a bow, thrifted, along with a striped sweater, also thrifted, and a mod patterned scarf. Bella exhibits pattern mixing at its finest.

Cat of At Home With Cat  wears her practical and pretty red and black plaid shirt with her fantastic bright red wellies. She looks fashionable and comfortable in this great picture with her husband.

Terri of Rags Against the Machine takes pattern mixing to a whole new level in this red plaid on red plaid look. I would have never thought these pieces  – the shirt, the pants and the bag – could work together but they do. They really do!

This is Terri’s more traditional plaid look. This dress looks great with the low-heeled oxfords.

You may remember Barbara’s look from the “How I Wear My: Secondhand Treasure” last September. I really love her secondhand Kenzo coat and wanted to highlight it again in this post because it’s a great example of a subdues plaid in soft earth tones.

My wardrobe is a bit lacking in the plaid department. I only own two plaid items and they are both scarves. I bought this viscose scarf at a small boutique in Sonoma a couple of years ago. It’s lightweight, very big and the colors are vibrant. I wore it casually with a grey Gap long-sleeved T (thrifted $3), Old Navy skinny jeans and black Hunter wellies.

Introducing this last participant is quite exciting for me. She is a dear friend of mine and someone who has never shown her face in the blog world until now!

Suburban Princess, who writes the blog The Life of a Suburban Princess and owns her own business, Royal Ribbons, agreed to let me show her off wearing her new Burberry scarf, purchased as a gift to herself for all her hard work growing her small business this year.

Thank you, SP, for allowing me to reveal your beautiful face to the world.

And thank you to all the participants! Jill and I always have such fun with these posts. We especially enjoy seeing all the different interpretations of the themes we choose.

After all the glitter and sparkle of the holidays, won’t it be nice to have a fashion palate cleansing? If you want to get back to basics please join Jill and me on January 3, 2013 for “How I Wear My: Black & White.” It’s a perfectly simple (yet always chic) way to ring in the New Year!

@Une Femme I have been searching for a plaid skirt and/or blazer to add to my wardrobe but nothing has crossed my path yet.
I am pretty pleased to at least have two plaid scarves. The other one is a Burberry…at least I hope it is. I bought it used from eBay long before they required authentication. I took the person’s word for it but part of me has always wondered if it’s a fake.

I loved that photo you put on your blog the other say of the woman in the red tartan plaid and leopard print booties. Such a fantastic looking combination!

@Kathy I agree! And quite the array of pieces from pants to scarves…we even have a plaid handbag in the mix. Fun to see all the different patterns and styles.

@Patti I am glad you enjoyed the post, Patti! I hope you’ll think about joining us next month for black and white.

  11. December 4, 2012 / 8:12 am Not sure why I lack plaid in my closet…too many years of plaid skirts in Catholic school perhaps?

I look forward to seeing what you’ll have for our next post in January!

I love everyone’s plaid looks! They are all so different and wonderful. I love the colors in your scarf, they’re so surprising and vibrant in a plaid. Thanks for hosting, I think this is one of my favorites (although, do I say that every month? I probably do)! XO, Jill

Ok, I seriously LOVE plaid and I love each and every one of these looks- but my faves? TERRI in her red on red plaid- total genius and JILL in her amazing peep of a red plaid tie- I have a plaid tie and guess what she just inspired me to do.

    Tie one on!

Such great ideas here Adrienne, and I agree that less flash and bling is a bit of relief for sore eyes! It does get to be a bit much 🙂

    Dear Adrienne,
Fun & awesome site, glad to have found you!

I’m writing a piece about a fictional fashion blogger, and I was curious about your readership. Would you mind telling me about how many people regularly read your blog? Feel free to send me an email if you don’t wish to make this information public. 🙂

    Thanks in advance,
