Distressed Denim, Hair Color and other things

Distressed Denim, Hair Color and other things
How was your weekend?
Mine was uneventful, but pleasant nonetheless. My husband and I cleaned our home, ran a few errands, went for a couple of walks and just sort of moseyed around the house. My biggest accomplishment this weekend was writing a post about my favorite things to do in Paris, on a budget.

Thank you for all the great Paris suggestions in the comments! Please keep them coming.
I am compiling a list of new things to do, based on your suggestions. And because of you, I’m planning on having some fantastic new experiences while we’re there!
In Friday’s post, I mentioned buying a $7.00 navy blue Sanctuary jacket on a visit to T.J. Maxx last week. I love the darn thing, but it’s lined and quite heavy. I’d be miserable wearing it with our current 70+ degree weather. It’ll just have to keep until fall unless we get some chilly weather before then.
But there’s a second jacket I bought that day, a little tweed number with fringe around the edges and 3/4 sleeves, that I can wear right now.

It’s by Cynthia Rowley, is light weight – though also lined – and it’s a great fit. I love the off-white shade with small specks of bright colors running throughout the material.
For Sunday’s errand running, I wanted to wear my new jacket casually. No sense in getting too gussied up to go to CVS and the cell phone store.
I wore some distressed boyfriend jeans from Gap. Some people think distressed denim is too young for someone my age, but small rips and holes in my jeans make me feel kind of edgy and, to tell you the truth, I’ll take that feeling where I can get it these days!

I wore my jeans and jacket with a Gap mint oxford shirt – which is very soft and comfortable, but loves to take on wrinkles – and a pair of tawny suede pumps. I carried my everyday bag, a Mulberry satchel.

I brought along this hot pink clutch to see how it would look. I prefer the cognac bag, but the clutch works, too.

I can already tell that my little jacket will get a lot of wear this spring. It can be dressed up or down and is a versatile wardrobe piece that will look great with a variety of colors. Not bad for $30.00!

After noticing all my ugly split ends last week, I made an appointment with my hairstylist for a cut and root touch up. She took some length off the ends and drew down my color down a bit from my roots, fading it into my ombre. I’m impressed with how the much shine hair color adds. The secret is ammonia-free hair color.

I was an obedient client and followed my hairstylist’s directions to not wash my hair for three days. It was hard to resist lathering up, but worth it to keep my color lasting as long as possible.

Do you color your tresses? Are you using ammonia-free color?Have an opinion on distressed denim? I’d love to hear it.

P.S. Miss Daisy is doing very well since her surgery. Thank you for your kind words last week. I still have not heard back from the vet about her tumor.

Meanwhile, she is back to business as usual, hanging out with her best doggy friend, Coco.

Love love your outfit today! From head to toe!
I lived in BF holy jeans this weekend…love them to death! I maybe too old for holy jeans, but I don’t care. 🙂
So glad Miss Daisy is doing well!

  2. March 10, 2013 / 6:21 pm

Love your outfit and although I’m older than you, I still love distressed jeans, with a few rips, as the weather warms up. Air conditioned jeans.
Your hair looks incredible – so shiny and healthy.
So glad Daisy is doing well and that she and Coco look so happy together. We took our two on a mountain hike yesterday and a beach walk today. It was sort of a perfect weekend. Will ask about the ammonia next time I go. Good tip.

  3. March 10, 2013 / 7:12 pm

    So cute! Love your outfit.
    I also love the puppies!

  4. March 10, 2013 / 9:17 pm

Great outfit! I love this jacket paired with the mint top & bf jeans. my bf jeans are my go to jeans!

  5. March 10, 2013 / 9:18 pm

@gracefully50 I love boyfriend jeans, too. I wear them almost everyday even though my husband is not a fan.
So glad you like the look, Jeannie!

  6. March 10, 2013 / 9:19 pm

@Kathy Sounds like a great weekend, Kathy.
I have a feeling your hairstylist uses ammonia-free color, but it’s always good to ask.
Airconditioning is yet another great reason to wear distressed jeans!

  7. March 11, 2013 / 12:39 am

Your photo of your dogs is so adorable!
I personally love distressed denim even though it can seem like a strange thing to shell out money for “worn out” jeans, but then when has fashion ever made sense! Your Gap jeans look great! I’m on the lookout for a decent pair of boyfriend jeans as I think they always look great worn with little smart jackets like you’ve styled them here.

  8. March 11, 2013 / 1:54 am

Lovely little jacket, Adrienne and pretty versatile as well. I love distressed jeans and have quite a few pairs.Your hair looks fabulous, as ever. And that is one of the cutest photos ever of your two little darlings – reunited!

  9. March 11, 2013 / 2:25 am

Love the jacket – looks good with jeans, but would probably look great with lots of things! Greetings from a freezing cold Scotland.

  10. March 11, 2013 / 4:23 am

I love your look head to toe! The bf jeans are perfect, I find them so easy to wear. The little dog photo is too cute!

  11. March 11, 2013 / 4:43 am

I do like distressed jeans and I’m quite a bit older, so there’s one “mature” woman’s opinion : > Love your new tweed jacket and how you’ve styled it. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday and have a great week ahead!

  12. March 11, 2013 / 4:49 am

why not, if they are not tacky, like with too many tearings and holes thst your bare knees stick out then yes go for them, and they look good with your new chaneley jackets, especially the one in black with silver threads I bet it must look perfect with distressed jeans. I’ve got a pair too, they are kind of absurd because they also have flowery patches hippy style, I plan to wear them with a electric blue tuxedo jacket as soon as spring comes…in a couple of months..so glad Daisy is feeling better..my dog had a similar growth too, they have to be removed but have no consequences…

  13. March 11, 2013 / 5:20 am

The combination of uber sophisticated jacket and laid back distressed jeans is just stunning! Those GAP fits you perfectly!

  14. March 11, 2013 / 5:44 am

I love your new pale pink tweed jacket and how you’ve styled it! LOVE! Funny how Cali weather is the kind where you need a jacket but can’t handle a winter one. In March. Lightweight all the way.

Glad your baby is on the mend!

  15. March 11, 2013 / 6:46 am

I have a similar blazer and I’m always at a loss to pick a matching top. I’ve just been sticking with white, but I will try it with a pastel shirt now. Thanks.

  16. March 11, 2013 / 6:58 am

@Veshoevius I would rather pay to have them already distressed than have to figure out to do it myself without waiting for eons. I used to DIY distressed jeans in the ’80’s and recall going overboard on my rips and holes!
I like the contrast between a feminine and elegant jacket and a pair of beat up jeans.

  17. March 11, 2013 / 7:07 am

@Sulky Kitten I had no idea my hair had shine until I saw this photo. The way I beat my hair up with irons and blow dryers, I figured all my shine was gone!
Aren’t the girls darling? I am going to miss them while we are away. Thank goodness for the ability to text photos. I have the house sitters on board to keep me apprised of their activities which include sleeping, eating, cuddling and wrestling 😉

  18. March 11, 2013 / 7:10 am

    @Liz Hi Liz! Welcome.
I agree. I think it’s a very versatile piece. I look forward to trying it with shorts once summer arrives.
    Thank you for stopping by!

  19. March 11, 2013 / 7:12 am

@silkpathdiary The bf jeans are my most forgiving and comfortable jeans. They are so easy to wear. I hope the trend sticks around for a long time!

  20. March 11, 2013 / 7:14 am

@Patti I think they are great at practically any age. I shied away from them a few years ago but now I can’t get enough!
Thank you for once again putting on VM!

  21. March 11, 2013 / 7:19 am

@lovesjetlag I love that idea! Please send a photo along, if you don’t mind, when you wear that. Hoping the weather will warm up for you soon.
I expect to hear from the vet today. Am prepared to hear that it was malignant and that’s okay. I am not going to freak out like I did last week. That was awful and exhausting.

  22. March 11, 2013 / 7:23 am

@Bella Q It’s sort of a pain in the arse to dress this time of year. It was freezing this morning – in the 30s – and later it will be 75! Layers, layers and more layers. That, as you likely know, is the key.

  23. March 11, 2013 / 7:24 am

@Kathleen Lisson Pastels are not great colors on me – I look better in deep, rich shades – but that won’t stop me from wearing mint, lilac and peach this season. They are just so pretty for spring, how can I not?

  24. March 11, 2013 / 8:26 am

    What a great jacket!
I wear distressed denim too and I am much older than you are. I think pairing the jeans with The elegant jacket makes the whole outfit look luxe.
Your hair is gorgeous, love the colour.

  25. March 11, 2013 / 9:12 am

I never got to commenting about dear Daisy but if you read my blog you know how feel about dogs. I’m so glad she’s doing well and I hope you get good news from the vet very soon!
I’ve been coloring my hair for years, and I’ve sported a purple streak in my hair since my mid-forties. It’s my little eccentricity.
The distressed jeans don’t work on most people – but they work for you. You’re smart enough to style them with classically elegant pieces like the jacket and pumps. The result is very chic and effortless.

  26. March 11, 2013 / 10:24 am

Love that jacket. I was inspired to head out to Goodwill after work and see if I could find something similar. I did not. But I did find an Ann Taylor black blazer that is super cute.

  27. March 11, 2013 / 10:30 am

This is a very chic Chanel inspired blazer and I love your styling with the cognac bag and those fabulous heels.

Your new haircut is beautiful, your hair is so shiny. I have an appointment tomorrow.

  28. March 11, 2013 / 11:12 am

Lovely outfit. I love the softness of the colors of this look.

  29. March 11, 2013 / 11:16 am

Darling jacket and DEFINITELY NOT to old to worn distressed jeans!!!! They look great on you! pippa

  30. March 11, 2013 / 11:57 am

Such a great hair color on you! Love the jacket and I agree.. a piece that can be dressed up or down. I like it with the distressed jeans.

  31. March 11, 2013 / 1:34 pm

@spashionistareport How fun to have a purple streak in your hair. I love that!
Yes, the Daisy issue was very stressful. I have a huge soft spot for dogs and did not take the news of a tumor well. Looks like I will have to wait another week (!) to find out if it was malignant or not. Must learn to be patient, I guess!

  32. March 11, 2013 / 1:36 pm

@vintagefrenchchic Good for you! I have found a whole lotta nothin’ at Goodwill lately. Kind of frustrating.
I hope you model the blazer soon on your blog for us! xoxo

  33. March 11, 2013 / 1:47 pm

@shopwithpippa.com Thanks, Pippa! Glad you think they’re not too young for me. I just love them – am wearing a pair of distressed boyfriends right at this moment!

  34. March 11, 2013 / 1:48 pm

@Leslie I want to try the jacket with shorts this summer, maybe some skinnies, too. Can’t believe it’s already time for spring clothes! Where did the time go?

  35. March 11, 2013 / 2:21 pm

We are just happy it reached 54 degrees today…!! Seventy sounds heavenly. Your hair is beautiful, and your outfit looks elegantly playful. Thanks for showing off! I’m inspired. Lynaea @ EverydayBloom.com

  36. March 11, 2013 / 7:17 pm

That jacket is so pretty with pastel shirt – so nice for spring! And the distressed jeans are fine – people who worry about dressing for age probably won’t end a sentence with a preposition either!

As is obvious from my photos, I quit dying my hair years ago, but I do miss that rich texture and shine that comes from coloring it. I should look for some gray treatment, but then I just end up having to think about it every few weeks again!

  37. March 12, 2013 / 9:30 am

You look so ready to stroll the streets of Paris … wait … I mean as a lady of style, draped on the arm of her adoring husband. NOT a streetwalker!
Beautiful … you and the puppies. The dogs, I mean.

  38. March 12, 2013 / 12:40 pm

Love your outfit today! It seems like everything I’ve been attracted to lately at our local TJ Maxx and Marshall’s stores have been by Cynthia Rowley. There have been some really gorgeous scarves among other things. I might have to go look for one of those jackets….
Hope Daisy’s results will be good.

  39. March 12, 2013 / 1:49 pm

This combo is stunning, one of my favorites of yours. The jeans are definitely not too young. Love!!

  40. March 12, 2013 / 11:17 pm

As long as distressed denim is worn appropriately, as you have done, it’s fine for any age 🙂

  41. March 13, 2013 / 4:43 am

Bah! No such thing as “too old”… Well, maybe for men in Speedos, but very little else fits into that category. Tons of things, however, fit into the category of making a person look too old for their years. Weird how that works.

I’m considering coloring my hair again. It’s been several years and I think some nice high- and low-lights might be in order. I’m just starting to get a few strands of silver through my hair and… I confess, I kinda like it! They are shiny, not dull, and almost feel exciting, like I’m entering into a new phase: I’ve been a diamond in the rough all these years and now that I’ve gotten some serious polishing, I’m acquiring a lovely, sparkling radiance!

Either that or I’m turning into a Twilight-esque vampire. 😉

  42. March 13, 2013 / 8:59 pm

You look marvelous, as always. I have distressed skinny jeans I felt sort of funny getting and wearing but my daughter told me to just do it! It’s so distressing when our little animal-friends are not well – I’m glad Miss Daisy is doing better.

  43. March 13, 2013 / 10:17 pm

You look gorgeous. The ladylike jacket looks amazing with distressed jeans! Love it!
See you in my blog, maybe.

  44. March 14, 2013 / 8:28 am

Hi Adrienne, With your upcoming spring travel to Paris I was wanting to ask if you could post about what your essential wardrobe items will be. You have travelled there in the fall I believe, and mentioned you wanted to pack less. What lessons can you pass on, and what will you take? How will your outfits mix and match? Anything special on your wish list while shopping in Paris?

  45. March 14, 2013 / 4:23 pm

Your blazer is gorgeous. I really like the look you pulled together.

Just found your blog today. Love it. I’m also a 40 something that lives in Norther Cali. Love your style. I wear distressed denim all the time. It’s ageless. You look fantastic. My hair stylist just did an ombre effect on my hair and I’m loving it.

Anyway, great to find you. I just added your blog to my sidebar. I hope that’s ok.
