10 Ways to Look and Feel Refreshed

10 Ways to Look and Feel Refreshed

If you’re like me, you’re feeling less than glamorous after the chaotic holiday season. I’m suffering from dry, flaking skin, a tired looking face, upset complexion and unruly hair –  just to name a few issues. But I won’t despair because with a little help from a handful of tips and a few products, I can look and feel a little more refreshed for the new year.1. Smooth Your Smacker

Flaky, rough lips are not fresh looking nor do they feel great. Use a lip exfoliator like a store bought lip scrub or better yet, just make your own at home. It’s very easy and I’ll bet you have the ingredients in your kitchen.

Once your lips have been smoothed, soothe them with a quality lip balm. I buy these Vitamin E sticks by Reviva Labs by the handful at Whole Foods. They are just $3.99 and feel lovely on your lips, long-lasting, too. You can also use it under your eyes and massage onto your cuticles to soften them.

2. Freshen and Strengthen

Jagged, weak and peeling nails are not cute nor are they fresh looking. Toughen up your nails with a nail strengthener like Nailtiques #2 or Essie Rock Solid. And be sure you keep up on your professional or your at-home manicures for neat and tidy looking nails.

3. Brush First

Several years ago I had a bout of breakouts on my chin and around my mouth. I couldn’t figure out why that particular area of my face was suddenly erupting so often. Then I read that certain toothpastes, especially whitening pastes, can cause acne. Washing your face before you brush can leave toothpaste residue around your mouth, which in turn can lead to angry skin. Simply brush before washing and you can avoid leaving traces of paste on your face.

4. SFP, All Year Long

That’s right. Even if it’s gray and cloudy and rain is coming down in sheets, wear a good quality, not full of nasty chemicals sunscreen on your face, earlobes and neck. Even on days when you don’t see the sun, damaging UV rays are still penetrating your skin. Sun damage results in anything but fresh looking skin. You can’t go back and change the past but you can do your part to prevent more sun damage now.

Vanicream is my favorite of all sunscreens. I’ve been using it consistently since discovering it at Mayo Clinic a few years ago.

5.  Dry Brush

Shed your dry skin, get your blood flowing and feel reinvigorated by dry brushing before your shower. You will not only feel refreshed but your skin will look and feel more soft. This post will tell you how and why you might want to start dry brushing your body.

6. Invest in Your Eyelashes

Buy a good mascara that won’t flake or smudge. When your mascara flakes and smudges it deposits tiny dark pieces of mascara under your eyes, giving the appearance of dark circles which make you look weary. I don’t mind spending a little extra to have a quality mascara that will stay where it’s supposed to: on my lashes. My two favorites are Diorshow or Eyes To Kill. Neither flake or smudge on me.

7. Instant Highlights

Miss having a glow? Well, you can have it back with an illuminating cream. Simply dab a little highlighter like Stila All Over Shimmer or Benefit Sun Beam on your cheekbones and brow bone after you’ve applied your makeup and you will look and feel glowing and refreshed, instantly!

8. Keep Your Hair Looking Healthy and Fresh

I know it’s counterintuitive but try NOT washing your hair so much to make it look fresh in the long run. Washing your hair often, using lots of shampoo and heated hair tools will make your hair look more like bristles on a broom than silky tresses. This post will tell you why you might want to shampoo less and will give you tips on how to best go about lathering up less.

Apply a hair mask once a week like this great smelling Macadamia Natural Oil. It will moisturize your hair and keep it softer and more manageable. And most of us could use a little more moisture in our hair this time of year.

9. Protect Your Hands From the Sun

My guess is quite a few of you get those long-lasting gel manicures. I love them but I don’t like what the UV lights that bake the polish on do to my hands. It doesn’t take much to get little brown spots on the back of your hands and before you know it, you’ve got quite a collection. While age spots are just a fact of life as you age, why not take some preventative action and protect your hands now?

These gloves block 98% of UV rays. And they are inexpensive at just $7.00. You can also wear them wherever the sun hits your hands, like in your car.

10. Sleep on a Savvy Sleeper

When Dale of Savvy Spice – a chic and gorgeous blogger, international traveler and fashion stylist from the Bay Area now living in Switzerland – emailed me and asked if she could send me a Savvy Sleeper, I was thrilled!

From the moment I opened the package and put my Savvy Sleepers on my pillow, I haven’t slept a night without it. Even on vacation, I bring it along with me.

Why am I so faithful to my Savvy Sleeper? It’s 100% satin – the softest and most luxurious satin I have felt – and it keeps my skin crease-free and my hair looking under control when I wake up in the morning. I actually look refreshed when I wake up!

There is nothing I dislike more in the morning than seeing deep creases on my face that often take hours to go away. Slumbering with a Savvy Sleeper has kept that from happening. And it’s a dream to sleep on.

One feature I love about the Savvy Sleeper is it has a 4″ x 4″ hidden pocket in the case where you can keep ear plugs, hair ties, your lip balm, whatever you like. I know I like to have my ear plugs handy, living with a firefighter who often gets called out in the middle of the night.

What tips do you have for looking refreshed?
Have a rich, rich day!
XO,
Adrienne
Last call! Today is the last day to submit photos for How I Wear My: Coat. Send a photo of you in your favorite coat to howiwearmy@yahoo.com and be sure to include a few lines about your look. Jill and I look forward to seeing how you wear your coat!
Disclosure: Dale gave me a Savvy Sleeper a couple of months ago, free of charge, and I haven’t slept a night without it since. All opinions expressed here are my own.

I really need this in my life
    Dreamy Giveaway!

  2. January 6, 2014 / 12:34 am

Just stumbled upon your blog and this post. Cool! I really need a satin pillow cover for my easy-to-frizz curly hair! Thanks for organizing this give-away;-)

  3. January 6, 2014 / 3:36 am

I just found this post on Pinterest. It’s great! Thank you! I have curly hair, I wonder if the Savvy Sleeper will help keep the frizz away?!

    • January 6, 2014 / 7:53 am

Let me ask Dale and I will get back to you about frizzies!

    • January 6, 2014 / 7:58 am

Yes! The Savvy Sleeper will calm your hair during the night. The Savvy Sleeper is soft and silky but not so much that your head slides around. It keeps your hair in place better than a regular cotton pillowcase. You should see an improvement in frizzy reduction by sleeping on one.

  4. January 6, 2014 / 4:10 am

What a great giveaway! As a side sleeper I always awaken with creases on the right side of my face – not a good look. I’ve already ordered a couple of items on your list from Amazon. 🙂

  5. January 6, 2014 / 4:11 am

such a good reminder about sunscreen gloves for the hands and the dry brush! Are overseas entries allowed Adrienne?

  6. January 6, 2014 / 4:35 am

All great tips! I may have to try the dry brushing thing. 🙂

  7. January 6, 2014 / 5:40 am

Thanks for the LIP info! I have been in search of a balm which really makes my lips fee silky…I will go by Whole Foods this week and pick one up!

    • January 6, 2014 / 8:29 am

This stuff is so great – I have tubes of it everywhere. The guy at Whole Foods said it’s the #1 best selling lip balm at his store. I love that it’s so reasonably priced!

  8. January 6, 2014 / 5:59 am

I have been passively looking for a silk pillowcase for a year. I have curly hair, and I am still trying to figure out how to sleep in a manner that doesn’t turn my hair into a rat’s nest. My hairstylist told me to try silk pillowcases. Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. January 6, 2014 / 6:19 am

would definitely love to enter 😀

  10. January 6, 2014 / 6:57 am

Lots of great tips here, A! I do wear gloves when driving, to prevent (more) sun spots.

  11. January 6, 2014 / 7:15 am

    Very good suggestions, thanks!

  12. January 6, 2014 / 7:44 am

Love to be in the giveaway. I’ve started using the co-washing method for my hair and my hair is much softer and manageable now. You may want to check out http://www.reddit.com/r/HaircareScience/comments/1m0g7c/conditioner_only_method_cowashing/ for more details. I have found that Loreal’s Evercurl conditioner works really well for me.

    • January 6, 2014 / 7:52 am

Thank you! I will check that out. I also like the time not washing my hair so often affords me. It takes me such a long time to blow dry and style my hair.

  13. January 6, 2014 / 7:51 am

I had that same problem with toothpaste, and always brush my teeth before I wash my face. So many great ideas. I used to do dry brushing, but got lazy about it. I would add hydrating with lots of water, which for me is always harder to do in the winter than the summer.

    • January 6, 2014 / 7:59 am

Yes, good one to remember. I drink far less water when I am cold. But much more herbal tea so that’s a good thing.
The toothpaste issue caused terrible problems for me for a long time until I figured out the culprit.

  14. January 6, 2014 / 8:00 am

Oh – how i would love to own one of these! My short hair looks like a tornado hit it every morning when I wake up – Sometimes it such a mess I have to wash it (more often than not) to get it under control! This along with the Macademia Natural Oil should work wonders….pick me!

My hair – especially my bangs – usually looks scary in the morning. The Savvy Sleeper really does help calm and smooth my bed head so I don’t have to do too much to look presentable in the morning.

  15. January 6, 2014 / 8:21 am

I’d love to win a pillow case!

My tip would be to use a sugar and oil hand scrub before applying your night time lotion. I’ve found it really helps.

    • January 6, 2014 / 8:27 am

Smart idea, Kate! I need to mix up a new batch of sugar and olive oil for my lips..will make extra for my hands. They are so rough and dry lately!

  16. January 6, 2014 / 9:21 am

Great giveaway! I really like the idea of taking these away with me when travelling.

  17. January 6, 2014 / 9:32 am

Dale is a doll and such a smart businesswoman. I am going to enter this and if I don’t win, will plan on buying one. I so need this I am a disaster in the morning and my hair especially.

I love these good tips for winter. I could try all these things. Feeling pretty out of shape and ugly about now. I think it’s all the indoor time. I love all Weleda products. I have not seen the toothpaste though! The vitamin E stick sounds good too. Great post!
    xx

  29. January 7, 2014 / 7:56 am

Good morning Adrienne-Love your tips on feeling refreshed. This is exactly what we are needing for January and I love putting the focus back on more self-care and health. I adore my Savvy Sleeper and agree with you, I have never felt such luxurious satin. Dale has created a fabulous product here. When she and I connected I learned that her idea for this product came from a conversation with her aunt, a hairstylist, here in Chico where I live. Isn’t it a small world? This is a fabulous giveaway. I’ve already won a Savvy Sleeper but will share this fun post.
    xx, Heather

I seriously want to enter this giveaway.

  31. January 7, 2014 / 2:40 pm

Great list, but spf 35 really won’t do the trick. The whole idea that it won’t help to go over a certain SPF is increasingly found to be bunk. It sounds like Wella is a great product, my pharmacist recommended it once, however, its really intended just for sunburn. Its not intended for a broad based UVA protection, and will not help with sun damage and premature aging. You need Avobenzone for that at at least 3%. Wella is really suggested for people with sensitive skin only. I use spf of at least 50( usually higher) and Nuetragena works well for me. I use it daily all year long, have for years, and it has cured my adult acne, cured the reddish tone I used to have in my skin, and I don’t even need make up any more. I have dark red hair, blue eyes, and dark eyebrows and lashes, so no make up looks swell on me. I don’t miss my tan at all.

  32. January 8, 2014 / 4:26 am

Where can you get vanicream sunscreen? I need something like that for the back of my hands and neck!

Wow, Adrienne! Thank you so much for this post and including me in your 10 ways to look refreshed. So glad you love Savvy Sleepers and I can’t wait to see who wins. Also – I never realized that whitening toothpaste fact, it totally makes sense though and I used to break out really bad. Also, those hand covers for the nail salon are such a good idea because I usually get the regular mani’s to avoid the UV light. Thanks again Adrienne! 🙂
