If you’re like me, you’re feeling less than glamorous after the chaotic holiday season. I’m suffering from dry, flaking skin, a tired looking face, upset complexion and unruly hair – just to name a few issues. But I won’t despair because with a little help from a handful of tips and a few products, I can look and feel a little more refreshed for the new year.1. Smooth Your Smacker
Flaky, rough lips are not fresh looking nor do they feel great. Use a lip exfoliator like a store bought lip scrub or better yet, just make your own at home. It’s very easy and I’ll bet you have the ingredients in your kitchen.
Once your lips have been smoothed, soothe them with a quality lip balm. I buy these Vitamin E sticks by Reviva Labs by the handful at Whole Foods. They are just $3.99 and feel lovely on your lips, long-lasting, too. You can also use it under your eyes and massage onto your cuticles to soften them.
2. Freshen and Strengthen
Jagged, weak and peeling nails are not cute nor are they fresh looking. Toughen up your nails with a nail strengthener like Nailtiques #2 or Essie Rock Solid. And be sure you keep up on your professional or your at-home manicures for neat and tidy looking nails.
3. Brush First
Several years ago I had a bout of breakouts on my chin and around my mouth. I couldn’t figure out why that particular area of my face was suddenly erupting so often. Then I read that certain toothpastes, especially whitening pastes, can cause acne. Washing your face before you brush can leave toothpaste residue around your mouth, which in turn can lead to angry skin. Simply brush before washing and you can avoid leaving traces of paste on your face.
4. SFP, All Year Long
That’s right. Even if it’s gray and cloudy and rain is coming down in sheets, wear a good quality, not full of nasty chemicals sunscreen on your face, earlobes and neck. Even on days when you don’t see the sun, damaging UV rays are still penetrating your skin. Sun damage results in anything but fresh looking skin. You can’t go back and change the past but you can do your part to prevent more sun damage now.
5. Dry Brush
Shed your dry skin, get your blood flowing and feel reinvigorated by dry brushing before your shower. You will not only feel refreshed but your skin will look and feel more soft. This post will tell you how and why you might want to start dry brushing your body.
6. Invest in Your Eyelashes
Buy a good mascara that won’t flake or smudge. When your mascara flakes and smudges it deposits tiny dark pieces of mascara under your eyes, giving the appearance of dark circles which make you look weary. I don’t mind spending a little extra to have a quality mascara that will stay where it’s supposed to: on my lashes. My two favorites are Diorshow or Eyes To Kill. Neither flake or smudge on me.
7. Instant Highlights
Miss having a glow? Well, you can have it back with an illuminating cream. Simply dab a little highlighter like Stila All Over Shimmer or Benefit Sun Beam on your cheekbones and brow bone after you’ve applied your makeup and you will look and feel glowing and refreshed, instantly!
8. Keep Your Hair Looking Healthy and Fresh
I know it’s counterintuitive but try NOT washing your hair so much to make it look fresh in the long run. Washing your hair often, using lots of shampoo and heated hair tools will make your hair look more like bristles on a broom than silky tresses. This post will tell you why you might want to shampoo less and will give you tips on how to best go about lathering up less.
Apply a hair mask once a week like this great smelling Macadamia Natural Oil. It will moisturize your hair and keep it softer and more manageable. And most of us could use a little more moisture in our hair this time of year.
9. Protect Your Hands From the Sun
My guess is quite a few of you get those long-lasting gel manicures. I love them but I don’t like what the UV lights that bake the polish on do to my hands. It doesn’t take much to get little brown spots on the back of your hands and before you know it, you’ve got quite a collection. While age spots are just a fact of life as you age, why not take some preventative action and protect your hands now?
These gloves block 98% of UV rays. And they are inexpensive at just $7.00. You can also wear them wherever the sun hits your hands, like in your car.
10. Sleep on a Savvy Sleeper
When Dale of Savvy Spice – a chic and gorgeous blogger, international traveler and fashion stylist from the Bay Area now living in Switzerland – emailed me and asked if she could send me a Savvy Sleeper, I was thrilled!
From the moment I opened the package and put my Savvy Sleepers on my pillow, I haven’t slept a night without it. Even on vacation, I bring it along with me.
Why am I so faithful to my Savvy Sleeper? It’s 100% satin – the softest and most luxurious satin I have felt – and it keeps my skin crease-free and my hair looking under control when I wake up in the morning. I actually look refreshed when I wake up!
There is nothing I dislike more in the morning than seeing deep creases on my face that often take hours to go away. Slumbering with a Savvy Sleeper has kept that from happening. And it’s a dream to sleep on.
One feature I love about the Savvy Sleeper is it has a 4″ x 4″ hidden pocket in the case where you can keep ear plugs, hair ties, your lip balm, whatever you like. I know I like to have my ear plugs handy, living with a firefighter who often gets called out in the middle of the night.
