How I Wear My: Sneakers

How I Wear My: Sneakers

Welcome to How I Wear My: Sneakers, the 31st installment of How I Wear My!

Is it just us or are sneakers everywhere these days? With features in magazines and in street style photography at different fashion weeks, and with retailers offering so many different patterns, colors, and styles, sneakers have never been hotter! Jill and I knew that for this month’s “How I Wear My,” sneakers would be a natural.

Jill of Everything Just So gets us started with a sneaker look ideal for walking around New York City. She’s wearing old Levi’s, Skechers sneakers, a Boden striped top and a silk chiffon stole by Anne Touraine Paris. I think Jill looks like a true French femme in her chic outfit!

Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life wears a lace dress from Loft, Gap animal print slip-on sneakers and a denim jacket from Kohl’s. The sneakers with the denim jacket dress down the lace dress to make for a casual and feminine look.

Susan of Une Femme, who is currently traveling in France, took time away from having fun in Paris to get a photo of her sneaker chic look. She must fit right in with the stylish Parisiennes!

First time participant, Glenda of So What to Twenty! has this to tell us about her Converse sneaker look:

“In their cheerful golden color, my Chucks have brought much sunshine to many of my wardrobe pieces…shorts and breezy tops, fun skirts, whimsical summer dresses and of course, denim. While everyday trainers could positively ruin an adorable outfit, Chucks have the ability to bring a bit of fun and quirkiness to an ensemble.”

Thank you for joining us this month, Glenda!

Wes of Life Through Preppy Glasses says:

“Sneakers have become very trendy, and I love to wear the high top style from time to time. For me, the high top means edgy and modern. Thus, I paired them with a sleek pair of heavily coated denim and a neoprene and wool graphic tee. I love a good sneaker!” And we love you, Wes! Thank you for bringing a stylish men’s look to HIWM!

Cynthia of My Rose Colored Shades wears her vibrant blue Skechers out with her daughter, a.k.a. her “mini me”, at the park. Such a darling photo!

Sheree of It’s Not That Deep is wearing an H&M dress and Converse sneakers. She added another skirt underneath the dress to give it more texture and volume. I love this edgy look!

Elise of The Cooking Wardrobe wears her favorite sneakers with white jeans and a colorful geometric single-shoulder tunic. She has had the sneakers for eight years, and says they are very comfortable as well as stylish.

Ana of Mrs. American Made looks darling in her sneaker look and has this to say:

“I don’t wear sneakers often, but this super casual ‘ride-my-bike-to-the-farmer’s-market’ outfit called for them. My dress and gingham shirt are American-made and my sneakers are from a trip to Italy a few years ago – one of those ‘I need comfy flat walking shoes’ moments.”

Heather of StyleMindChic Life says:

“For my look I chose to mix it up with Coach sneakers, a striped maxi skirt, black top, woven bag from Dominican Republic, bracelet from Tamera Beardsley Designs and Stylemindchic mini rings & necklace. My hat, embellished with ‘tie’ material is from the mens’ department. This is a fun look for an easy, breezy weekend and a little ‘sneakin around.” Perfect for poolside cocktails or a summertime party!

Alicia of Spashionista says:

“The pink and white polka dot Converse are Girls shoes and were $12 on clearance. I rarely wear sneakers unless I’m going to be “off-road” so to speak. For the past several weeks hubby and I have been trying to rescue a dog that’s been living on a bluff near a public park for nearly a year so I’ve had occasion to wear them lately.”

You can’t help but feel happier just looking at those sneakers and that smile!

Malia from Style by Malia goes designer with sneakers by Coach, boyfriend jeans by Torrid and floral button-down by Ashley Stewart for a casual spring sneaker look.

Helen from Valley of the Shoes has this to say about her cool sneaker look:

“I love my new navy sweatshirt dress since it’s exactly what I was looking for in a casual dress for the warmer months. I think the neon sneakers paired perfectly with the sporty chic vibe of the dress. There was a slight chill in the air that day, so I threw on my denim jacket and grey camo scarf for some fun cozy layers.” Very sporty yet feminine!

Natalia of In The Writer’s Closet says:

“I am excited about the sneakers theme because I rediscovered them for myself only recently. I included this photo with my red/purple Keds. I wear sneakers with pants/jeans and skirts/dresses and just love them!”

So colorful and fun!

Trina of Tea Time With Trina says:

“When you take a simple black maxi skirt and wear it with a pair of Converse, it just takes on a whole different role. This outfit says, ‘I can be stylish and still have a whole lot of fun’. I think wearing Converse or anykind of sneakers with skirts or dresses takes some confidence but it sure can be enjoyable.” Love how effortlessly stylish this looks!

For my look, I chose to wear my gray Supergas with some destroyed white boyfriend jeans from Gap, a Theory collarless blazer and Rolling Stones tank.

I know I am breaking a lot of “over 40 fashion rules” but I don’t care! I love this look and it speaks to the side of me who likes to be a little edgy and very casual.

Easter may be over but we still have those beautiful pale colors on our mind. Pale blue, yellow, mint, baby pink, lavender. We can’t get enough!

If you are still thinking about them too join us in June for “How I Wear My: Pastels.” All shades welcome! Send pictures of your looks to by June 2, 2014.

Thank you to all of the stylish participants!

One of my favorite HIWM posts – I love every single photo, and look. Your outfit is great as always, and don’t pay attention to those over 40 rules….ever. Love those neon yellow sneakers so much too.

Personally I am not a sneakers fan I have to admit. But I like the new sneaker slippers and need to try them!

Great variety of sneaker looks! I’m seriously loving all the bright colors and patterns (leopards & dots) on the sneakers. I think they bring out the kid in all of us. I’m over 40 and I think your outfit is very cool and I’d totally wear it. Thank you for posting my look! xx

I love all these looks – and am excited to use this inspiration for the low converse sneaks I just ordered. One question: almost all of these looks do not show socks. Do people go barefoot in the sneakers or can you recommend a low sock that will not show? Between pedis and sweaty feet, I hate to not wear socks!

    • May 7, 2014 / 10:56 am

I need to wear socks with sneakers too. I wear cotton no-show footie socks, something like this:

Who says sneakers are just for kids? It’s great to see so many different styles and especially nice to see lots of Converse! I think Chucks are finally “in vogue” to stay and can be considered a classic wardrobe staple.
