Celebrating Four Years

Celebrating Four Years

On this day in 2010, I published my first blog post here, on what was then known by the two people who read it as “Un Peu de Tout”. Four years, a different name and 713 posts later, I am still surprised by my continued commitment to it, by my drive to make it the best I can, and by you all –  my supportive, kind, articulate and intelligent readers.

4 candles

I mulled over a few ways I could commemorate the four-year anniversary of The Rich Life but they all seemed boring or trite or both. The most un-dull way I could come up with to mark this occasion is to answer a question I am often asked: “How did you get into blogging?” So let’s go with that.

In 2008, a friend of mine from high school emailed me to tell me that she had a blog and that she thought I should start one too. The first thing I asked her when I wrote back was, “What’s a blog?”

Once she introduced me to the blog world, I found myself online for hours reading blogs. French-themed style blogs, dog blogs, humor blogs, interior design blogs, beauty blogs, book blogs, shoe blogs, it seemed the subject matter was endless. And most of these bloggers were just average jills and joes like me! Suddenly I realized I could have my own place in the world to write about whatever I wanted. And strangers might even read it…and like it!

I knew this was something I had to try so I opened a Google account and started a blog on Blogspot. In the three months I had my first blog, I changed the name four times and mostly blogged about not knowing what to blog about – not exactly fascinating or engaging content. I told no one I had a blog, not a single soul. After about a dozen mind-numbingly uninspiring posts, I decided to put the pathetic thing out of its misery and deleted it.

But blogging stayed on my mind. I continued to read a dozen or so blogs, many which are now defunct. In 2010, I gave blogging another chance. I felt I’d read enough blogs in those two years to know what I was doing and it was worth taking another stab at. I was ready.

On June 29th, 2010, “Un Peu de Tout” (A Little Bit of Everything) published its first post. I blogged about French things, travel, cutting corners, household tips, my dogs, fashion, books, and anything that happened to be on my mind except whining about not having anything to blog about. I also decided to be open this time and told anyone and everyone I could about my blog. It was my new favorite topic.

Versailles

My header photo for a couple of years. This is the French Pavilion at Versailles, a photo taken by my husband in 2008.

One day another longtime friend of mine was visiting. I was eager to show her my blog and proudly pulled it up on my laptop. Though she liked the content and the design, she thought the name was horrible and told me as much. She mumbled the title and said, “No one will remember the name of your blog, you know. Ever. And what the hell does that even mean anyway?” Embarrassed, I laughed uncomfortably because I knew she was right but also nervous because that meant I had to think of a new title and I knew from past experience that blog naming was not my strong point.

She offered to brainstorm with me. So I pulled the cork on a bottle of chilled Sauvignon Blanc and we started throwing out names. By the time we came up with a title we both were excited about, the wine bottle was empty and The Rich Life on a Budget was born!

Four years on and my interest in French culture and cutting corners on household costs have been replaced by a lifestyle blog that encompasses what makes my life rich – internal and external, material and intangible – in the hopes that I might make your life even a tad richer while continuing to add richness to my own.

I want to thank my two dear friends: one who introduced me to blogging and encouraged me to try it and the other who wasn’t afraid to give me constructive yet blatant criticism and helped me get on the right path with my blog.

And I want to thank you readers for four pretty great years of blogging. Without your readership, support and a generous helping of discourse, I would never have lasted four years, probably more like four months.  I am forever grateful to you all.

If you have a blog, I would love to your blog story. How did you get into blogging?

 Make it a rich day!

XO,

Adrienne

First and foremost, HAPPY BLOGAVERSARY! I think it’s safe to say that many of your blogging peers, myself included, have been influenced by TRLOTB and by your unwaveringly gracious attitude. You deserve every success and, even though I rarely have time to comment, I always enjoy your adventures.
I’m kind of stunned that I won the Tria Age-Defying Laser! Thank you so much for your candid reviews and for the giveaway. I can’t wait to use it and do some reviews of my own!

    I enjoyed your . . . “Celebrating Four Years, a Blog Story . . .”
I have been reading and following you for a few months, after a friend of mine, the one who brought me to blogging, sent me one of your posts. I enjoy the diverse nature you bring to your Rich Life On A Budget . . . most of all, I enjoy your seemingly authentic, non pretentious nature. I glean bits of wisdom each time I read you . . . I think one of my favorite posts is the eShakti: Made to Your Size and Style. I have passed this info on to others who also find it challenging to find things to wear that fit right, look great. I have yet to place my order . . . but plan to do so soon . . .

I began Irish Garden House because I was watching my friend enjoy her blogging connections . . . so I asked her to help me get started. One of the first things she asked me was . . . what name do you want for your blog. Instantly I said, IGH and I was born . . . The name inspiration came from our first trip to Ireland and the gardener cottage we slept in. The cottage was featured on my first post. My Mister Irish Garden House hubs had a garden house replica built for me near our home. And out of that first post entry I have relished writing, sharing and giving my caring through blogging. It has been a wonderful three years . . .

      Hi Lynne,
I liked that eShakti post too. It was fun to do and I love the company. Well made clothes to fit anyone. Such a brilliant idea.
You are so fortunate a name came to you right away. I really struggled with a blog title – but when I said The Rich Life on a Budget aloud for the first time, I knew that was it. It’s a gut thing…you just feel when it’s right and when it’s not.
I am off to take a look at your Irish Garden House! Thank you for the lovely words and reading my blog. I appreciate it!

Thank you, Lisa. It did take me quite some time to find my voice. I know that when I had my first blog, I was deeply concerned with trying to produce material I thought people wanted to read. That backfired in a big way and has been a lesson I have remembered since.

  7. June 29, 2014 / 1:05 pm

Happy blog anniversary, Adrienne! Wow, 4 years already – keep up the good work, your interesting posts and the fabulous photos – here and on Instagram. I always look forward to your “Good morning” photos!

My daughter who started her first blog around 2,5 years ago, inspired and encouraged me to start blogging myself. I was involved in her early phase and found it very interesting. Especially in Germany there were hardly any blogs for over 40ies (and still there are only a few) and I made the decision to change that. Glad I did as blogging became an important part of my life.

      Annette,
Yes, four years already. I would have never dreamt I would keep this blog for so long, especially after my first blog was such a disappointment. I think it’s a good reminder of the old adage, ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.’
I love that your daughter got you into blogging. What a wonderful way to deepen your bond!

Happiest of blog birthdays! I’m so grateful you chose to try blogging once again (4 years ago), your blog truly does enrich my life as well as many many others. It’s obvious you care deeply about your readers and making their lives more rich in every way possible. I look forward to following you for many more years.

What kind words from you! That means so much…I, too, am looking forward to spending many more years blogging along with some of my favorite people – most of whom I would never know if not for the blog world.

  10. June 29, 2014 / 7:31 pm

Happy Blogiversary! I have always enjoyed your blog and look forward to future posts! Always fun to read why and how people start their blogs.

I didn’t know what I was doing when I started (and still don’t) but I wanted a space for older woman to chat and get ideas of not dressing frumpy because we are in our 40s and beyond. I feel so blessed to have found such a supportive community.

Alice – thank you for sharing why you got into blogging. I love your style – it’s great for readers of any age but I think we women over 40 deserve the most attention since it lacks so much in retail/media. Fashion bloggers over 40 fill that gap and provide such a useful source of inspiration. So thank you for that. I do it myself too (fashion, that is) but not as much as I used to. Hope to be doing more soon. Thank you for your kind words, Alice!

  11. June 29, 2014 / 9:21 pm

Adrienne, Congratulations!! I loved hearing more about how your blog evolved! Isn’t it funny how what we love changes over time? I of course have been reading for at least 3 and a half years so remember much of that!

I began mine after my husband kept telling me to try it. I wasn’t sure what blogging even was either. Now I am so grateful I started and that I have this outlet. I feel like I’ve been gone forever and need to catch up on all your posts. Hope summer is great! xx Kim

      Kim,
Yes, it is interesting how we evolve and our interests change over the years. Keeping a blog for a long period of time allows us to see those changes.
I think it’s so cute that your husband encouraged you to blog. I love that!
Hope you’re having a blast in Hawaii! Aloha!

Thank you, Jodie. I don’t know that I would have been able to keep going if I had youngsters at home and/or a full-time job. It helps enormously to have a life mostly free from time-consuming obligations. I always joke that the blog is the most work I have done in a career with the lowest (virtually no) pay. But it’s the only ‘career’ I have ever been truly passionate about. Thank you for your support and readership over the years, Jodie! xoxo

Thank you, Kathy. One of the best things – if not ‘the’ best thing – is the friendships I have formed via blogging. It makes me sad to think that we would have never known each other if it weren’t for the blog…and that would be such a terrible shame!
I am proud – mostly for sticking with it for so long.

Hello and Congratulations on your fourth anniversary! Yours is one I read regularly, due to your kind and unpretentious manner. No story on my blog yet, as I’m still only an aspiring blogger…..but your comments echo what I’ve been running through in my mind, especially the reluctance to tell anyone. When I’m up and running, I shall have to tell absolutely everyone! And that is a very difficult task for one who has always been very shy. Keep up the good work, you never know what “old lady” will be inspired to keep going!
    Thank you!!

      July 1, 2014 / 8:23 am

      Hi Jennifer,

I am not sure why or how I made the switch from being secretive about my blog to telling anyone who would listen. The second time around, I thought I would give blogging a solid try rather than hold back and hesitate as I did with the first blog. Not to say that anyone who is secretive about their blog is holding back. Some people have very good reasons to be anonymous. It’s just that I had no real reason to be secretive other than I just wasn’t fully committed to my blog…didn’t even know what I wanted it to be about. Once I made the decision – and found my voice – I wanted the world to know!
All the best for you as you begin your journey in blogging. And thank you for the kind comment!

When I first started out, I never dreamt I would be blogging four years later. Many times I thought of throwing in the towel…but those moments passed and I realized I can’t imagine a life without blogging. So, at least for the foreseeable future, I am here to stay! If you love it, Lana, I hope you stay with it. It can be a source of so many wonderful things – mostly, meeting great people. Thank you for the kind words!
