As 2014 comes to a rapid close, I decided to take a look back at the fashion posts published on The Rich Life this year, just as I did last December.
I combed through all of my posts and selected my favorite looks from each month in 2014. It gave me a chance to think about my wardrobe, recall the fashion chances I took that worked and didn’t work, and better define my overall style.
My hope is it will inspire you to review your favorite looks of 2014 – on your blog, looking at personal photos from the year or just browsing your wardrobe. Here is my roundup!
2014: A Calendar of Fashion Favorites
January had me trying out the new sneakers-are-not-just-for-exercising trend. I call it Sneaker Chic and I am still embracing this style on a regular basis. Heck, I probably will forever, even when it’s not a current trend. I realized early in 2014 that being comfortable is just as important as being stylish.
In February I experimented with the menswear trend. This fedora, given to me as a Christmas present by my dear friends at Montecristi Panama Hat Company, was the ideal menswear accessory. I continue to wear hats frequently. And while I don’t wear blazers very often anymore, I still like to dabble in looks inspired by men’s fashions.
From the look on my face in this photo, March had me either over-caffeinated or very excited that the wrap blouse was a thing. Easy to style, fashionable and it hides a middle-aged midsection? Sign me up! I don’t see wrap blouses as much anymore but I hope they make a comeback next spring. Crossing fingers.
In April I styled my favorite trouser shorts with a tunic and my most-worn sandals. Some might say a woman in her late 40’s should probably not wear shorts this short. I mean, who wants to see jiggly cellulite and blue veins? The thing is, I like shorts and don’t care if my legs aren’t perfect. I would rather not follow the advice of the over-40 fashion sheriff’s and instead listen to Anne Lamott – who wrote this best ever Facebook post that you should definitely read – and wear, “shorts out in public if it is hot, even if your legs are milky white or heavy.” I say yes to that!
Silky pants became popular last spring and I rejoiced. Pants made of soft, loose, and airy fabric that feel like pajama bottoms but technically aren’t, are a fashion dream come true. In May I bought these silky pants at Marshalls and styled them with a basic tee and sandals. I think these pseudo jammies may give shorts a run for their money next summer!
In June my husband and I visited Monterey Plaza Hotel to do a review on the experience. It was a tough to enjoy all those stunning views of the bay, wonderful seafood, great wine, superb customer service and a luxurious massage but someone’s got to do it. I brought the cutest shoes in the world (also known as Valentino’s on a Budget, sadly not made anymore) with me on the trip and paired them with a mint green sweater, colorful statement necklace and a trench. Pretty much every outfit I wear with these shoes is a favorite of mine.
One of the best experiences I had this year was attending Festival del Sole in Napa Valley last July. Music, art, wine, and food came together over the course of ten days in beautiful locations like Castello di Amarosa, where I wore a simple Banana Republic dress with Sole Society pumps and huge statement earring from Tamera Beardsley.
Over the summer, I was introduced to Stella Carakasi, the woman and the clothing line. I am now an ardent fan of both. In August I gave navy culottes by Stella Carakasi a try again after a 30 year hiatus from this cropped pant trend. I loved culottes as a teenager and love them again now that they’re back. Did you give this fashion re-boot a spin this year too?
In September, Anne Touraine, who is such a lovely woman, sent me this silk chiffon polka dot stole. I loved styling it with a red camisole and pinstriped pants. I think this is the most classic look I wore in all of 2014. Quite professional looking of me, I would say.
October starts my favorite time of year for everything – food, weather, and clothing. I love to wearing winter white with optic white and fall is the best time of year to do that. I love this outfit because it’s comfortable, simple and laid back yet it’s still modern and stylish.
With cooler weather, November allowed me to finally wear an alpaca cape I had hanging in my closet for months, another gift from my Montecristi Panama Hat friends. I wanted the cape to the star so I wore it with a simple black monochromatic outfit. I feel rather grown up in this outfit.
Ever since this Luxe Wrap arrived in the mail from my friend Casey of Mason Street Designs, I have had it on high rotation and have worn it at least six times this year, which is a lot considering I have only had it about a month. It’s the main focus of my favorite December look and plan on wearing it well into the spring. In fact, I used my own code WOMENINBUSINESS to buy another one in taupe! Use yours before it expires on 12/31.
Twelve outfits for twelve months. And I still can’t find anything to wear in my closet.
Happy New Year, everyone!
I hope you had a wonderful 2014 and that 2015 is even more fantastic.
Make it a rich day!
P. S. Many of the Women in Business offers are quickly coming to end. Be sure to visit the sites of these hard-working business owners to use your code before it’s no good. Use WOMENINBUSINESS (in most cases – check posts for details) and pick up some year-end deals, all while supporting women-owned businesses.
