Welcome to How I Wear My: Poncho or Wrap, the 51st post in the How I Wear My series!
The wonderful month of October – my favorite month – is finally here with its promise of crisp, leaf-strewn days and cooler moon-filled nights. Jill of Everything Just So and I thought this would be the ideal occasion to devote a “How I Wear My” to the poncho or wrap!
My How I Wear My partner, Jill, gets us started by showing us her poncho look. Jill tells us, “A friend of mine picked up this textured and fringed black poncho for me in a little shop in Queens after I admired it on her. I love the boho feel of it. I’m wearing it with Old Navy white jeans, black ankle boots and my Hermès Jigé clutch in Rouge Vif boxcalf, my very favorite clutch that I bought secondhand a couple of years ago.”
What a luxe poncho look! And I love the red, white and black color combination.
Annette from Lady of Style also wears a black poncho and layers it with a crisp white shirt. She adds shine and some edginess to her look with patent leather ankle boots and faux leather leggings. She says of her striking outfit, “With a studded bag it is kind of a cool and fierce look but I softened it with pearl jewellery and made it my own style!”
I adore the balance of edginess with femininity and the black and white contrast is a true classic. This is a look I would wear in a heartbeat!
Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo goes for color in her wrap look. Suzanne altered her kimono/wrap by adding pompoms, velvet ribbon and tassels to it. She’s wearing her wrap with skinny jeans and a sequined top. So many textures and colors to love here!
Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun says, “I love this month’s theme! This herringbone poncho is from eShakti and I’m trying it with the fedora hat trend.”
Dawn Lucy is turning lots of heads in this poncho outfit to be sure!
My friend Amy went to a wedding in her wrap look and tell us, “I took along this beautiful wrap my daughter bought me in Paris for my 60th birthday! It was perfect as the chill of fall was in the air. I love this wrap because I was looking for something with these colors in it and then voila!! She knows I love wearing blue!!!”
Amy has the bluest eyes of anyone I know. Blue suits her as does this lovely Parisian wrap!
Nicole of High Latitude Style, who resides in Alaska, tells us this about her wrap:
“I wear this or a similar look when the temperatures drop into 40 below zero. I belt the scarf to the coat so it would not slip off and to have some shape. Even though at these temperatures nobody looks anyhow and everybody looks like a dumpling. However, I do it for me to look like a dumpling with a waist. LOL.”
I can’t imagine what temperatures that low feel like. Creative Nicole has found a way to look fashionable while staying warm with her beautiful plaid wrap!
Reader and first time How I Wear My participant, Betty of Virginia, shows us how she wears her wrap and share this with us:
“A wrap adds a bit of panache to any outfit and is a wonderful alternative to a sweater or jacket when the weather or air conditioning is too chilly for bare arms. In addition, many of us have less than perfect upper arms, and I have found that a pretty wrap provides just the coverage I need. However, a wrap can be awkward to keep on your shoulders when you are juggling a clutch bag, a drink and a plateful of snacks. One of my solutions has been to position the wrap the way I want it and secure it with a decorative pin or broach. The wrap then stays in place and gives you full arm movement. I have found many inexpensive pins and broaches at vintage shops and thrift stores.
This sparkly mesh wrap (26” x 80”) is versatile and especially useful when the weather is too warm for a sweater or jacket. It provides just enough warmth and camouflage.”
Thank you for the style tip, Betty! Be sure to see another creative way Betty wears her wrap on Jill’s How I Wear My post.
Malia of Style by Malia wears a cashmere blend poncho in heather gray from Mason Street Designs, sold at Shop The Rich Life. Malia says, “A girl really can’t go wrong in cashmere. When I saw Adrienne with this poncho on, I knew it had to be mine. The heather gray is perfect for this fall. I added a great pair of high-waisted bootcut jeans from Torrid and a pair of gray ankle boots. This fun plaid fedora is from Forever 21 and is ideal for drizzly fall days. This is a look I would wear while catching up with the girls over happy hour!”
The cuff looks so chic with this outfit. I love the hat and tailored jeans too. A wonderful classic fall look!
Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life is in the pink! She’s wearing a feminine pink poncho she bought last spring. It’s a lightweight cashmere and she says it’s perfect for this time of the year and a great piece to throw on to go out for the evening.
Alice is glowing and radiant in her pink poncho. I love the pattern mixing in her outfit too!
Linda of A Labour of Life combines two of my favorite fall colors, burgundy and gray, for her poncho look. She tells us, “I paired my Forever 21 poncho with a pair of Merlot leggings ( F21) and an over-the-knee boot from Shoe Dazzle. Matching gloves and a crystal necklace capped off my look.”
I adore the over-the-knee boot with a poncho idea. So chic!
Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style wears a bright and cheery red poncho and says, “I could’ve/should’ve knitted myself a poncho, but when I found this one at the thrift store for only $5.00, how could I resist? Being a lover of bright colors, I paired it with my Fabrizio-Gianni honey colored jeans! Of course I had to add a long necklace since the front of my poncho is so plain (accessory addiction could be my middle name!) I’m always so amazed at how warm these ponchos are even though your arms aren’t totally covered!”
What a great find for $5.00! Jodie’s poncho is darling with the rolled neck and fringe detail. That shade of red is beautiful on Jodie.
Jordan of Kay and Star wears a colorful kimono wrap her husband bought her in a shop in Santa Fe. She tells us, “My Daughter thinks I should give it to her because it’s all her favorite colors. I think I’ll keep it.” As you should, Jordan. It’s gorgeous on you!
Jordan makes beautiful and unique jewelry and is wearing one of her necklaces with her kimono wrap. I am also wearing a Kay and Star necklace with my poncho look!
Pam of Over 50 Feeling 40 tells us, “I just found this deep forest green knit poncho with black inside at Stein Mart and I had to have it. I am wearing it over an Eileen Fisher long sleeved black tunic, black Soft Surroundings snake pint leggings, a Chico’s necklace from last year, and new shoes from Dillards! Complicated look…but I really like it!”
I really like it too, Pam! That deep green color is so flattering on you and the poncho is a great piece for fall and winter.
Nora of Jacket Society looks like she stepped out of a high-fashion magazine in her Merlot Hooded Poncho with Fringe, recently added to her collection. She styled it with Rag & Bone black skinny jeans, v-neck tee, Trouve sandals and Givenchy bag. She tells us, “I added one of our pendant tassel necklaces which works perfectly with the poncho to finish the look.”
Hmm..a Merlot poncho might be just the thing for a Wine Country fall. Time to go shopping!
Trina of Tea Time With Trina wears lightweight poncho she found at Anthropologie and says, “This has been a perfect transition summer into fall item. I paired it with my white denim and a pair of booties to bring in a little autumn feel. I’m looking forward to trying it with a pair of flair jeans and clogs.”
Such a fresh look! The pastel hues and dark blues make this poncho stylish any time of year.
Susan of Une Femme d’un Certain Age does fall in Los Angeles right! Susan tells us, “I first saw this plaid poncho last spring during an Eileen Fisher fall preview event, and knew I’d be stalking it come fall. Love this softer way to incorporate some plaid into my wardrobe!”
I adore this plaid wrap. And I love the way Susan started with an all-white foundation, then added some warm tones with the cognac boots. Bravo!
Ana from Mrs. American Made is ready for winter in her brown tweed cape by Trina Turk. Ana says, “I like to wear this #madeinusa cape in both fall and winter. In winter a cape is great because you can fit many lathers of warmth under it and it creates a beautiful outer layer. Here I am wearing a base layer, a flannel shirt, jeans and a hat – plus the cape – for a casual look on a snowy day.”
What a darling winter look, from head to toe!
I started wearing ponchos last fall when my friend, Casey of Mason Street Designs, sent me one of her cashmere blend ponchos to review. I fell in love with it and had to have another and another. Now I have several in my wardrobe. This black cashmere blend poncho will be getting a real workout this fall and winter. I love a head-to-toe black outfit with a splash of color and texture. I also like to accessorize ponchos with long necklaces to break up the lines. This black and silver beaded necklace with tassel from Kay and Star is just the touch I wanted for my poncho look.
To finish off my outfit, I am carrying the You Had Me At Merlot Adora by Adrienne bag to add some rich wine color to my outfit.
What a great round up this month! Thank you to all the participants who submitted their poncho and wrap looks. Jill and I love to see how you styled them.
