It’s hard to believe but Independence Day is just a little over two weeks away! If you’re celebrating this national holiday, it’s not too soon to start thinking about what you’ll wear. Every July I like to get into the spirit and dress patriotically on July Fourth.
I choose outfits I can be comfortable in throughout the day because I never know how long I’ll stand while watching our hometown parade or how far I’ll have to walk from the car to get to our destination on a day that seemingly everyone is out and about.
Rather than wear clothing specifically made for this holiday, I like to wear items from my everyday wardrobe and add festive July Fourth accessories.
Here are several July Fourth outfit ideas ranging from ladylike to casual and inspired by a few recently added pieces of jewelry and a couple of neck scarves.
Ladylike July Fourth Outfit
For July Fourth events that call for a dressy look, I’ll wear this Ann Taylor wrap dress that I bought a few weeks ago. The fabric is so soft! I can’t get over how comfortable it is. I like that it hits me at the knee and that the wrap part of the dress is not fussy – everything stays in place and I don’t have to readjust it all the time.
I added a bracelet stack from the Kay and Star Patriotic Collection. I customized my charm and had it stamped with the word “Freedom”. I also wore a small red, white and blue star brooch that I bought for a buck at thrift store ages ago.
To get into the spirit of things for this photoshoot, I asked my husband to take out our small flag for photos. Yes, this our small one. Our large one is as big as a compact car!
Monochromatic July Fourth Outfit
You’ll stand out in the crowd in a monochromatic white look. An all white outfit looks crisp and summery and it can help to keep you cooler on a hot, sunny day. Just be careful when eating those hotdogs and hamburgers. If you drop yellow mustard or ketchup on your white pants, it’ll be pretty hard to hide it!
I’m wearing a white Dana Cold Shoulder Top from Covered Perfectly made with super soft and breathable MicroModal. I like this style of top as a summer alternative to a regular top. And unlike an off-the-shoulder blouse, I can wear it with a bra that has straps.
My pants are from Old Navy (on sale for $20) and are comfortable and lightweight. And they are machine washable. I wore white blocked-heel sandals for a little extra height as my pants, which are “tall” size, are long.
To make this look festive for July Fourth, I simply tied a red, white and blue plaid neckerchief from J. Crew (no longer available but there are similar festive scarves in the shopping bar below) around my neck and carried a cobalt blue leather tote from Adora.
Country July Fourth Outfit
To make it a little more festive, I added my Patriotic charm bracelet from Kay and Star and added a blue gingham neck scarf (also from J. Crew and also sold out).
I can certainly wear this outfit without the hat too, for a slightly toned down country look.
Casual and Comfortable July Fourth Outfit
If lots of walking, standing, and sitting on picnic blankets are planned for July Fourth, I’ll opt for casual comfort when it comes to my outfit. These jeans are from Gap and they have just the right amount of stretch to them for bending and sitting (and eating too much potato salad).
A bright red MicroModal Simple Comfort top from Covered Perfectly is the ideal top for this Kay and Star necklace, also from their Patriotic Collection. I love the way the blue tassel stands out against the red.

Boho July Fourth Outfit
I don’t think it’s possible for me to do a multi-outfit post that doesn’t include a boho look! For my final look I am wearing my flared jeans from Old Navy and added an off-the-shoulder top from Gap (same top in dark blue). I added the Kay and Star necklace for a pop of festive red and cobalt and carried my Adora bag.
Let’s talk strapless bras real fast. In a previous post, I mentioned that I could barely stand to wear a strapless bra for longer than an hour or so. I have finally found a bra I can wear all day without wanting to scream. The one downside is it only looks decent with blouse-y tops. I would not wear it with a fitted top or fitted dress because it’s not supportive or shapely enough.
If you’re planning on celebrating Independence Day, what will you wear?
