How I Wear My: Cropped Pants

Welcome to August’s How I Wear My: Cropped Pants, the 61st post in the How I Wear My series!

August is here already and cropped pants are everywhere! Summer might be the perfect time to wear them, but they are available in all kinds of fabrics and seem to be a trend with year-long staying power. That’s why Jill of Everything Just So and I wanted to highlight them for this month’s “How I Wear My.”

Jill of Everything Just So gets us started with her cropped pant outfit featuring stripes and dots. Jill tells us:

“I have been wearing these white cropped pants from Old Navy so much this summer—glad I bought a back-up pair! They go with every single thing in my summer wardrobe. The striped shirt is from Target and the silk scarf is from Anne Touraine Paris. It has become my favorite summer scarf.”

Glenda of So What to Twenty shows us some fun and edgy cropped pants and says:

“In recent years, and with my new found boldness, I found it necessary to unleash Glenda, and to let my spirit shine far beyond my closet. So in this style story, I’m wearing an audacious outfit that some may turn their noses at, while others may say bravo. It combines a funky mix of retro 70s with a touch of sweet, and badass rolled into one.”

Catherine of Not Dressed as Lamb wears rose print cropped pants and tells us:

“I wore this outfit on my birthday last month when we went out to dinner – it was my first attempt at the off-the-shoulder trend and surprised myself that I liked it (on me) so much. With my favourite type of floral print (it has a touch of both the 50s and the 80s to it) on the cropped trousers and the most supremely comfy mules it’s now one of my favourite outfits this year. Thank goodness the British weather was warm enough on the day to wear it!”

Jacqueline of Petite Silver Vixen shows us how she wears her linen culottes and has this to say:

“Took me ages to find a pair of culottes that suited me; they can be tricky garments to pull off particularly if you’re short in stature. But this year I found my perfect petite pair, proving that even petites can wear wide-legged culottes without drowning in material! Nothing says summer more to me than linen. For a casual summer evening out in Copenhagen a couple of months ago, I paired my linen culottes with a chambray top and a light wash denim jacket with rolled over cuffs. A few simple silver jewellery accessories finished the look to tone with the grey of the culottes.”

Collette of Styled Comfort is wearing denim cropped pants and has this to say:

“My cropped jeans by White House|Black Market have gotten plenty of wear this summer. My favorite way to wear these cropped pants is with an ankle bootie. Here, I pair my dark wash crops with a neutral ankle bootie and tucked-in floral peasant blouse. I love how pairing cropped pants back to an ankle bootie elongates the leg line and can make your legs appear longer. These cropped jeans will also transition nicely into fall by switching out the blouse with an oversized sweater.”

Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun wears cropped jeans with a dress and tells us:

“I wore this burgundy sleeveless swing “dress” with my cropped raw edge jeans.  Why did I pose with an elephant? Because it was there?!”

Rena of It’s all Fine. Whatever tickles the fancy. shows us her cropped pants look, ideal for travel, work or fun and tells us:

“Back in June, I did a post showing the versatility of cropped pants and how I wear this pair for work, play, and fun.  This was the fun look which coincided with a weekend getaway along the California central coast and a stop in Morro Bay.”

Cheryl of Northwest Mountain Living wears a monochromatic neutral cropped pant look and says:

I am wearing Jag cropped pants and a Loft top that is layered. I loved all the detail of the cropped pants and didn’t want to cover them so I tucked in the under layer of the top which gave the top a cropped look. I loved the outcome. A pair of Michael Kors wedge heels, and a hat completed this outfit.”

HIWM Cropped Pants Cheryl

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge wears paisley cropped pants with coral shades and has this to say about her outfit:

“I styled coral paisley print capri pants ( from New York & Company) with a black tank and coral cardi.  I added my blush lace-up flats and pink and coral statement necklace to complete this (Mother’s Day) outfit.”

HIWM Cropped Pants shelbee

Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life  wears red-hot cropped pants and says:

“Cropped pants are my favorite length of pants since I can wear them with most type of shoes.  These J Crew have been a closet favorite because of the vibrant color and it feels so different for me by pairing them with a pair of booties which I have not done before.”

HIWM Cropped Pants Alice

Susan of Une Femme d’un Certain Age shows us an outfit from her recent fabulous trip to Europe and says:

“I almost never travel without these cropped knit pants. They dress up or down, and are comfortable in a wide range of temperatures. Here I am on my way out to dinner in Honfleur, France.”

Suzanne of Suzanne Carrillo wears her cropped pants two ways and tells us:

“These are my cropped Anthropologie harem pants in silk. I never thought I would be able to wear harem pants because they are so baggy and shapeless. I bought these at a thrift store in NYC a few summers ago. I ended up altering these pants so the waist would sit higher and the crotch wouldn’t sit so low which slimmed them out a bit. They are an ideal summer pant, they breathe and they aren’t tight.”

HIWM Cropped Pants Suzanne

Nicole of High Latitude Style wears a pair of leather cropped pants and tells us:

“These capri pants are leather. They are perfect for the cool summers in Interior Alaska. I like to wear them in a classic style with a knitted sweater and either pearls or, like in this example, with a scarf. I love the combination of beige and navy blue. Here I went for an all neutral outfit in these shades. When I wear capri pants I either go for my Jackie O. sunglasses when I styled them in neutrals in an American Classic way like here. When I style them with red in an Euro Chic way I go for cat eye shapes.”

HIWM Cropped Pants Nicole

Julie of KayandStar wears a crisp and fresh cropped pant look and says:

“I found capri or crop pants are not very flattering for me but I love ankle length pants. My favorite summer find was my Kork-ease sandals – they are so comfortable and look great with a shorter length pant. I also love a classic white shirt, they always make me feel dressed and ready for any event. The one I’m wearing is a Chicos tunic.  Of course I’m wearing a gold and black arrowhead druzy necklace from KayandStar.”

HIWM Cropped Pants Julie

Nora of Jacket Society wears cropped denim and tells us:

“I am wearing our Black Eyelet jacket with Banana Republic cropped flares, Dolce Vita lace up sandals, Chanel bag and our own silk print neck scarf. Jacket and scarf are available on our web site.”

Tamera of Tamera Beardsley wears her cropped pants to the beach at sunset and says:

“Cropped pants are always a favorite choice of mine! They are  wardrobe staples that are easy to wear …and always a perfect way to show off a great pair of shoes…or even a sunset stroll on the beach!”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style wears cropped faded denim and tells us:

“I’m wearing a pair of cropped flare jeans. Since I almost never wear trousers, I had to search a bit for this one! I wear these preferably with heels and a simple blouse.”

HIWM Cropped Pants Nancy

Linda of a A Labour of Life wears a cropped jumpsuit for her look and says:

“This is a fun cropped romper from Target that I paired with a checked blouse and snakeskin shoes. It’s a casual romper glammed up for dinner out, a night with the gals or anywhere you want to look fun and casual.”

Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style sent in a photo of her stepmom, Nancy. She says this about Nancy’s denim capri look:

“I know many women hate the idea of capris, but they are actually Nancy’s go-to in the summer months!
I think that having the right fit can make all the difference, because doesn’t she look great in this?
This photo was taken from our recent Knit Shirts series —Fabrizio-Gianni generously gifted us all these jersey knit shirts, so I did an entire series on them! This is basically jeans & a t-shirt but not a sloppy version!!”

For my look, I wore my favorite cropped pants for summer. These Beyond Basic pants are by Stella Carakasi from their Spring 2015 Collection. They continued this pant for Spring 2016 in new colors.

They are made with a lovely lightweight fabric that is a blend of hemp and Tencel.

At 6′ 2″ and some change, I appreciate the variety of lengths trending in pants these days. I don’t have to be as concerned about where pants hit me anymore. From culottes to ankle pants, anything goes!

I styled my cropped pants with a white camisole and a white open knit sweater, also by Stella Carakasi from their Spring 2014 Collection.

I added a pearl and geode bracelet from KayandStar and wore blue block-heel sandals with a little silver anklet I bought with my friend Chrissy, who came up for a visit from Las Vegas last month.

I also carried my yellow Adora by Adrienne bag, for a pop of summer color but also as a hint as to next month’s theme!

That’s right…for September, Jill and I want to celebrate yellow! From sunflowers in bloom to lemon sorbet that’s so refreshing on a hot day, yellow is a signature color of the waning days of summer. Style your favorite shade of that sunshine-y color and join us for “How I Wear My: Yellow.” Send photos to us at by September 12, 2016, and be sure to tell us a bit about your outfit.

So many fabulous examples of cropped pants!

I’m also tall, and I agree it’s great that there is more room to play with pants’ lengths these days! I love your yellow tote! I already have an outfit in mind for next months’ prompt; now I’ll just have to get my act together and get it ready and submit it on time…

Remember the days when pant length trends were so exacting! I had a heck of a time when I worked in the financial district of San Francisco in the late 1990s, trying to find slacks long enough. I finally did source some but they were $350 and from France (Wilkes Bashford sold them). I did buy a pair and wore then until the lining literally disintegrated! There are not only so many pant lengths that are on-trend right now but so many tall options to choose from. I don’t need to break the bank for a pair of slacks anymore. I just head to Gap or Old Navy online!
Hope to see you next time for Yellow. Sign up for the HIWM reminder email and you won’t forget. I only send one reminder per month so I don’t bug people too much 😉

Wonderful turnout this month and I love your striped/dot/cropped pant look. I have that scarf in black and white – will have to find a new striped shirt to give it a go myself!
Thank you for your partnership – I can’t believe we’re coming up on 5 consistent years of HIWM! We must celebrate! xoxo

    Missing you much my friend!!

I want to try the fringed jean trend too! I stink at DIYs though…still might give it a go.
I miss you lots and want to catch up soon.
Thank you for the outfit submissions. Jill and I hope to see you for Yellow! xo

What an incredible round up! The time you spend each month on this is amazing, thank you for doing so. Love your Stella crops, in my next life I’m going to ask to have more height added (haha) so I can wear items like that.
And are we all loving Glenda’s frayed jeans . . .

Jill and I were just discussing how time-consuming HIWM is not just on the two or three days leading up, but throughout the month. We love it, though, and after almost 5 years of never missing a month, it’s become part of our lives.
I love my Stella cropped pants – have them in white too – and if I could gift a few inches of my height away, I would. Just two – an even 6 would mean clothes fit better. But I am not complaining. Being tall is great!
We are all loving those frayed jeans…they are so cute!!

  6. August 10, 2016 / 9:04 am

What a great round up! Love your look especially the yellow bag. Thank you so much for putting it all together for us and I look forward to next month’s looks.

  7. August 10, 2016 / 12:10 pm

Fantastic post, as always, ladies. Adrienne you look amazing in those pants. I thought I could not participate in this month’s theme because I buy cropped pants and they just look like regular pants on me, but I see I am not alone! LOL And I love Glenda’s fringe – like Tamera’s – and inspires me to try a #DIY. Thank you for a lovely post and see you all for yellow, : ) Ana

Jill and I were wondering where your photos were this month. I thought it was because you were traveling!
Isn’t Glenda’s outfit fantastic? I love it. Tamera’s fringe is too.
See you next month for Yellow! xo

  8. August 10, 2016 / 2:41 pm

Wow, Adrienne, I didn’t realise you were so tall!
I love the idea of yours being partially made from hemp.
I love all the different styles and prints – again showing such originality from everyone.

    Thanks for another great month.

The pants are very lightweight – they do wrinkle a bit as natural fabrics tend to do (I am sure you have the same issue with your linen culottes) but I think that just comes with the territory and I actually don’t mind it.
Wonderful turn out and I am so glad someone – you – sent in culottes! I was going to wear mine but this summer has been full of indulgences and I need to trim off about 5 – 10 pounds before mine fit me again. Ugh!
See you next month for Yellow, I hope! Thanks for joining us. A

My favorite HIWM post ever. Everyone looks great, and so stylish. I wear cropped pants all year round, just above my ankle bone – works well for So. Cal. Congratulations on such a successful post and group of beautiful women.

Yay! So happy to hear that. I think it’s one of the best for sure, if not THE best.
I wear my jeans cropped almost all the time – make it easier to switch out flats for heels. I don’t have to worry about length at all.

So many fabulous outfits built around cropped pants! And so many different types of cropped pants, too. I actually prefer cropped pants with booties in the Fall, so this post really got me excited for cooler weather! Thanks again for a wonderful monthly series. So much fun!

Great round up of fabulous outfits as always, Adrienne – thank you so much for featuring mine!

Your cropped trousers look fantastic – you’re so lucky being tall because you’ll never be “chopped in two”… your long legs can take it!! Gorgeous accessories too 🙂
