Around Here Lately…

Hello, friends and happy weekend!

Today I’d like to catch up and tell you what’s been happening around here lately…

New Blog Layout and Features

You may have noticed the blog looks a little different. I have added drop-down menus to my “Travel & Wine Country” page, organized by city or region.

After nearly 7 years of blogging, I have a lot of content, some of it is useful to people traveling to Wine Country, California in general, Paris and other areas in Europe I have blogged about. This is a work in progress and will be growing over the next few weeks as I create more menus.

I have also switched the layout from full blog posts to excerpts so you can see more posts at once. Just click on the one that interests you to see the full post.

Home Gym Rat

Recently I wrote about converting our formal dining room into a home gym last December. It has a treadmill, a weight bench and lots of other fitness tools. I spend a lot of time in there, I’m happy to report, and becoming a gym rat – a home gym rat!

Lately, I’ve been getting in 10 to 15 miles with a combination of running and fast walking. It feels so good to sweat and get my lungs, legs and heart pumping. It is weirdly rewarding to see all those workout clothes in the laundry basket every week!

I don’t weight myself anymore (too frustrating 😯) but I can tell I am getting tauter and slimming down a little. It sure does take a lot of work to lose even a pound at this age. Geez!

So instead of weight loss, I focus on how great exercise makes me feel. I sleep better, my back no longer hurts and I don’t overheat at inappropriate times as much as I did before I exercised regularly.

Getting a treadmill has been such a gift for my mind, body and soul. It’s been life-changing. Oh, and thank goodness for Netflix. If I didn’t have a good show to watch, I wouldn’t make it 10 minutes! I just finished BBC’s Shetland this week. Loved it!

A producer for A & E invited me to a dinner in Napa Valley that was being filmed for a new culinary series airing next month. The show is hosted by Sur La Table National Chef, Joel Gamoran, and executive produced by Katie Couric.

Chef Joel and crew traveled around the country, meeting up with local chefs and collaborating to create delicious meals using what most of us consider food scraps. You can read more about the show here.

I didn’t hesitate when asked and said YES right away! Tori, my stepdaughter who is real foodie and loves to cook, got out of her evening class and came with me.

It took place at Larkmead Vineyards in Napa Valley. This was my first visit to Larkmead.

It is stunning and I can’t wait to return for a tasting and spend some time in these red rocking chairs.

I have photos of the dinner and the set but I don’t want to give too much away….yet. But I will share this fun photo with Joel in front of their darling 1963 VW truck and mobile kitchen named Pippi.

I will be sure to let you know when our episode airs. The series begins May 21st on FYI at 10:30 pm.

Planning My 50th Birthday

In six months, I will be turning 50! I love traveling so a trip will be my birthday gift for this milestone occasion. I want to celebrate 50 by going on a road trip with Bill to New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona with stops along the way in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where I grew up.

I particularly want to spend time in Austin, San Antonio, and Marfa, Texas. I also want to visit Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico and take a sunrise hike in Sedona, Arizona. I love getting out in nature and can’t wait to photograph colorful canyons, desert plants, and see the vibrant fall leaves in the southwest. Your travel tips – hotels, restaurants, shopping, hikes, experiences – for these areas are welcome and appreciated!

 New Spring Sandals!

The pom-pom trend is so darn cute, don’t you think? I like to wear them in small amounts. I came across these shoes the other day and fell in love with their tiny and colorful pom-pom detail.

I am still waiting excitedly for their arrival on my doorstep. If they fit me and are comfortable, I’ll make them a regular part of many spring and summer outfits. And they’ll come with me on my road trip.

I can already picture myself shopping in the boutiques in San Antonio and Santa Fe wearing my adorable pom-pom sandals!

New Arrivals at Stella Carakasi

Gorgeous new pieces, some of which you may have seen on the runway in my recap of the Spring Style Event at Stella Carakasi, are arriving online.

Here are just a few of my many favorites. I love the luscious coral color, Papaya, and the soft brown shade, Truffle, is just yummy!

The Chelsea Dress pictured in the collage is so chic and it’s perfect for travel. It’s meant to be crinkly and even comes with its own travel bag!

How I Wear My Reminder

May’s “How I Wear My” is fast approaching! The theme Jill and I chose for May is “Ladylike Elegance.” Whether it’s the combo of a classic pencil skirt, cardigan and pearls or you veer toward a tailored set of trousers and jacket, show us how you define ladylike elegance!

Photos are due by May 1, 2017. Send them to us at and be sure to include a description of your outfit, which we will quote directly in our posts. The post will go live May 3rd!

I’m off to hit the treadmill!

What’s been happening with you lately?

Take it from a Texas girl…..if you are going to San Antonio and to Austin, you cannot miss the Texas hill country. In Boerne, TX go to The Creek Restaurant for dinner and in Fredericksburg, TX stay at a B&B and visit the wineries and shops up and down main street.

Thank you, Abbe! I will check Boerne and Fredricksburg out! I am guessing the weather is pretty mild in October in that part of Texas, yes?
Thanks for your suggestions. Much appreciated!

Yes, October weather in Texas is almost perfect!

From another Texas girl (although I live in Austria now), I highly recommend the Salt Lick bbq restaurant near Austin: Of course, I don’t know whether or not you’re a vegetarian, but if you’re a meat lover, this is one to put on your list. And October can be a beautiful time of year in Texas – I always used to look forward to October because it meant finally being able to open up our windows at home after months of hot, humid weather.

      Hi Alison,

My husband loves BBQ and so do I – we will add this to our list of must-visits.
One reason I thought of visiting the southwest for my birthday is it’s the ideal time of year to go to hot and humid places. Having grown up in Las Vegas, I have had my fill of hot weather and I am not a fan!
Thank you for the recommendation! Austria was on our list of places to celebrate 50 but we’ve decided to stay in the states, closer to home.

Sounds like a great trip Adrienne! I was in Sedona 15 years ago…gorgeous part of the country…Tony lived in Austin for a few years and my FIL is from Santa Fe. I Maybe I can get some info on places to see when you are there. I do remember Tony mentioning the Salt Lick BBQ as Alison did above.
