Welcome to May’s How I Wear My, the 71st post in this long running fashion series!
Athleisure is the sort of trend that seems especially made for the warmer months’ promise of increased outdoor activity so Jill of Everything Just So and I wanted to kick off the start of summer focusing on this fun fashion phenomenon.
Let’s start things off with my stylish How I Wear My partner, Jill.
JILL OF EVERYTHING JUST SO
“My idea of Athleisure is the kind of clothes you could wear to a tennis tournament or on a sailboat so I paired my Old Navy white cropped pants with a J. Crew linen shirt, an open weave cardigan, and a pair of mint green Puma sneakers I picked up on sale last summer. They are so comfortable and go with everything!”
ROSEMARY OF DISTINCTLY SOUTHERN STYLE
“My wearing of athleisure wear is basically as workout clothing. I am always either walking, biking or going to my yoga practice. My style is basic yoga pants and Nikes.”
Diane of Fashion on the 4th Floor
“I’ve been a tad obsessed with ‘athleisure’ as of late and it pairs well with my tomboy tendencies. I chose a different take and decided to glam up my athleisure looks with heels versus tennies. I love the juxtaposition of various joggers with more polished or edgy elements to create my outfits. I love the girly, feminine color of pink, but I also want a few hints of tomboy, so my look isn’t so cutesy.”
April of Ms. B in the Bay Area
“This is pretty much my weekday uniform. I love wearing Athleta leggings that have a built in skirt/skort. I workout in this outfit and run errands and I feel perfectly covered and comfortable. And I love wearing Nike half zip workout shirts.”
Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style
“I decided to see if I could create some outfits wearing sneakers with a skirt! This was my interpretation, since a denim skirt goes with everything, right?”
Jacqui of Tenáz Athletics
“This innovative athletic top is my go-to when I prefer not to go sleeveless. Designed by my company, Tenáz Athletics, Tenáz Tops provide a bit of coverage without retaining excessive heat. Our signature 3/4-length stretch-mesh sleeves give my “Fierce Fifty+” arms and shoulders a firm, toned look while keeping my skin cool and dry. They’re great for workouts, running errands, or a just casual lunch with the girls. I think other Fierce 50 women will love the soft, breathable fabrics and relaxed, comfortable fit.”
Annette of Lady of Style
“Just recently I wore black jogging trousers in a feminine style. The jogger’s fabric is a smooth viscose blend which makes them more formal than casual sweatpants, hence they go well with my personal style.”
DAWN LUCY OF FASHION SHOULD BE FUN
“Loving a cozy lightweight off-the-shoulder sweater for a cooler day at the beach!”
“Can a pair of track pants fit in at the office? I took on that challenge by pairing them with some of my usual standard fare in work attire like a black blazer and embossed patterned tote.”
Jess of Elegantly Dressed and Stylish
“I’ve incorporated the athleisure trend with these memory foam sandals from Jambu. Love the sneaker look with a bit more style. Athlesure is just a fun casual look, and white adidas or ‘old school’ sneakers are back in style, wearing them with dresses. I enjoy a fun, laid back look too.”
Linda of A Labour of Life
“I may not be a huge athleisure gal but I do love my Old Navy Silk Joggers. The key to making it work is with material and footwear.”
Kim of Northern California Style
“I am wearing a few pieces from Tory Sport, one of my new favorite athleisure lines. The track pants are amazingly comfy and are actually flattering with a retro side zip. The sweatshirt and bag with tennis ball tassel I bought for tennis from the same line. The bag is so light and roomy with a ton of pockets, I plan to use it for travel too.”
Nicole of High Latitude Style
“These satin joggers are the newest addition to my summer wardrobe. These are super light, i.e. I can wear them even on a hot summer day. The satin fabric keeps its form. Thus, they won’t look frumpy after a day of sitting at the desk. The color goes well with gray, black, white, blue and even olive.”
Ana of Mrs. American Made
“The Ameican-made Dolan blanket cardigan makes the look and instantly turns it into an outfit. Under it I am wearing a black knit tunic by Theory and black leggings by Beyond Yoga, both #madeinUSA, with tall black boots for a sleek line. And then I added the cardigan to complete the look. Some delicate jewelry and bold sunnies made it perfect for running errands which led me straight to the gym at the end of the day. Win, win.”
Colette of Styled Comfort
“I love the Athleisure trend! I normally wear these super comfortable Metro Slouch active-wear pants from Athleta with a t-shirt to run quick errands on the weekends, but here, I decided to elevate this casual style with a black t-shirt and vegan suede drape jacket. I accessorized the look with a lightweight scarf and this is now one of my go to outfits for running errands and then meeting up with friends for lunch or an early dinner.”
Glenda of So What to Twenty!
“The life I have created for myself, though it is exciting and often glamorous, there comes with it, an area that I find challenging. Being an author and influencer requires me to be ‘On’ quite often. What do I mean by On? I have to put myself out there in the public eye; whether I’m in front of a camera, at a meet-and-greet, or speaking at an event, these types of activities can be difficult for me. Rather than avoiding them, I welcome the challenge, but I know I must follow-up with time set aside to breathe. This is the way I refuel, think, remain in touch with myself, pray, get centered, seek direction, etc.”
I used to have a knack for coming up with outfits that I could exercise in and wear to meet a friend for lunch. But when we decided to turn our formal dining room into a home gym last year, I stopped going out into the world to workout and I also stopped caring about looking cute to exercise. No one, except my husband, stepdaughter and 4 dogs, sees me in my running get-up. It’s not exactly stylish! I opt for comfort and convenience over presentability.
So when it came time to create a look for this month’s How I Wear My, I realized I was out of athleisure practice when I became stumped with what to wear. I started with my cute New Balance sneakers and built my outfit around them.
I wore my “Pink Skies Up Ahead” t-shirt and kept my makeup to a minimum – just a dab of cream blush, sheer lipgloss, mascara and a little eyeliner.
Exercising at home or not, I think I need to add more athleisure outfits to my wardrobe. I forgot how cute and comfy they can be!
Thank you to all the stylish participants this month. Jill and I enjoyed seeing all your sporty looks!
