Welcome to July’s How I Wear My, the 72nd post in this long running fashion series!
Summer is in full swing and it seems like embellishment (especially embroidery) is the season’s top trend, so Jill of Everything Just So and I wanted to devote July’s “How I Wear My” to a classic summertime style that is particularly popular right this instant!
Let’s start How I Wear My: Embellishment off with my stylish HIWM partner, Jill.
JILL OF EVERYTHING JUST SO
“My favorite tunic this summer comes from Old Navy and has white embroidery and tassel ties. It goes so well with white denim! The earrings I am wearing were a gift to me many years ago from a TWA flight attendant who bought them during a layover in Greece in the late 1980s. They are little lions and I treasure them because of who gave them to me, where they came from, and because my astrological sign is Leo. Whenever I have them on, I always feel so glamorous.”
GREETJE OF NO FEAR OF FASHION
“I feel like a princess in this long fuchsia skirt. But I hardly use it. It is either too hot or too cold to wear it. Darned.. have to find a solution for that. The blue shirt is embellished with little mirrors. Over the skirt I am wearing a metal (with blue) belt.”
“Here’s a recent picture of me wearing my most favorite color: White! This dress is perfect to show off my new handbag. Straw handbags are in vogue right now, and this one with the colorful pompoms is just darling!”
Valerie of Maple Leopard
“I love pom pom embellishment! It’s my favorite trend right now and this beach cover up is perfect as a dress or to cover your suit.”
SHELBEE OF SHELBEE ON THE EDGE
“This green dress needed a little extra something and my shoulders needed a little extra coverage. What better way to do that than with an embroidered and beaded pashmina. I love all the details on this wrap, including the fringed edges, and it is just the right size to wear as a scarf, a wrap, or even a short sarong. I purchased this piece at a Middle Eastern gift shop over 15 years ago and it is still in frequent rotation in my wardrobe.”
Leslie of Hostess of the Humble Bungalow
“I love it when you find a dress that is already embellished and can stand on its own effortlessly. A simple frock that doesn’t require a lot of extra effort especially on a hot summer day when all you want to add is a wide brimmed straw hat and a cute pair of sandals.”
TRINA OF TEA TIME WITH TRINA
“You can incorporate this fun trend of embellishments just by adding a hat with some pompoms to your outfit. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy summer or this trend than with a great new hat.”
LISA OF THE SEQUINIST
“I’m wearing a mesh dress from ASOS which is covered in bright cheery floral embroidery I’ve worn it dressed up with jewellery and heels to an evening event and dressed down with a biker jacket and flats for daytime. The heavy embroidery always makes me feel a little ‘extra’!”
Mallory of Vine Living
“I pulled this look together for a work OOTD and it has become a regular part of my weekly wardrobe. I can get away with the length being a little shorter than normal for work because of the modest neckline. The embroidery becomes the star of the show in this instance and is allowed to shine on a very basic white dress without too much else going on. Without the embroidery, this dress would not be part of my closet ! Everyone needs a little flair in their lives!”
MICHELE OF @CHELE_CLARK
“This is an embroidered cold shoulder top from Walmart on clearance for $5, thrifted Gap girlfriend jeans and thrifted Michael Kors sandals.”
“I love this black embroidered top. I paired it with black jeans and red flats.”
DAWN LUCY OF FASHION SHOULD BE FUN
“Loving the embroidery trend, especially this sweet little peasant blouse with red floral embroidery and the crochet lace off the shoulder detail.”
NANCY OF NANCY’S FASHION STYLE
“I only have one item in my closet that suits the subject!”
Linda of A Labour of Life
“When life gives you lemons make lemonade, or find lemon shoes. It all makes a little bit of sour a whole lot sweeter. Mixing my lemon shoes from Shoedazzle with an amazing floral dress.”
CHERYL OF NORTHWEST MOUNTAIN LIVING & STYLE
“The embellishment for this outfit is my embroidered jeans. I styled them with a dusty blue tee shirt that had a lot of hem that I pulled through my belt loop, something I do often. I like to do that to keep from being over powered by fabric. My fun mules have some embellishment on the heels being wrapped in rope. To complete my outfit I carried my leopard bag which some say is a neutral these days!”
NICOLE OF HIGH LATITUDE STYLE
“This dress has a knot in the front as an embellishment which caught my eye. When I got it I saw that one could pull a belt through it. So I embellished the embellishment with my pink belt.”
ANA OF MRS. AMERICAN MADE
“As soon as I read the theme for July, I knew I wanted to send in photos of me wearing this beach cover-up from vacation. I bought this American-made gem by Karen Kane a while back. I had seen everybody wearing pom-poms and tassels the last time I was here in Hawaii so I decided to do a tiny modification and add my own trim to this piece. I bought a yard of pom-poms at the craft store and sewed them right along the bottom edge hem. I am super happy with my cute, comfy and newly-embellished piece.”
NORA OF JACKET SOCIETY
“I am wearing our Blue and White Print Kimono that has lace and embroidery in the front with our White Peasant Blouse with Lace trim, Gold Leaf Necklace, denim shorts, Platform sandals, red Prada bag and a straw hat for fun! The Kimono, blouse and necklace are all available in our shop.”
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a big fan of embroidered detailing so edging on this peplum top really caught my eye. Recently when meeting up with a cousin and her husband for dinner, I wore it with a brightly colored floral print cardigan and a pair of black jeans.”
Claudia of Happyface313
“Accessories are my embellishment. I think everybody knows how much I like my arm candy, but also my Twillys and scarves. Not just because a silk scarf might keep me warm, but also because it will let me dress up an outfit in no time. A sudden dinner invitation? Turn a scarf into a blouse under a jacket or wear it as a sash. It’s easy-peasy and looks fantastic!”
CATHERINE OF NOT DRESSED AS LAMB
“I am SO much in love with these pom pom and tassel sandals, a friend on Instagram described them as ‘the happiest sandals in the world’, and I think they are! They’re very boho chic and rainbow-bright, I fancied a bit of a contrast to my preppy-style dress and I thought the two together might be a bit of a style risk, but it was one that paid off.”
TAMERA OF TAMERA BEARDSLEY
“Being a huge lover of accessories … my style is all about embellishment! I love finishing off my outfits with jewelry, a bag, a great shoe and headwear of some kind! Whether it be hat, headband or crown … headwear is always my finishing embellishment!”
For July’s How I Wear My look, I chose to wear a light blue kaftan I bought several weeks ago. It’s made from soft cotton that is lightweight and ideal for these HOT summer days we’ve been having. I makes a great swim coverup or a dress.
The kaftan has a small design embroidered throughout in bright red, kelly green and cobalt blue. I wore it out to dinner with my husband recently at the new Pinoli Cucina Rustica at Applewood Inn (more about that on the blog soon). It was a warm night so I didn’t need a jacket or anything extra. I did bring my plantation hat along though.
I think the embroidery really makes this dress. Without it and the stripes, my dress might look more like a hospital gown!
I carry my white Italian leather handbag whenever I get the chance. I’m so in love with it and get compliments all the time. I also wore my go-to sandals. I have worn these shoes so much, I don’t know what I wore before I found them!
