How I Wear My: Straw

Welcome to September’s How I Wear My!

It may be September but summer is not through with us yet! Now is the time to get every last bit of fashion fun out of warm weather clothes before fall makes its first appearance.

Jill of Everything Just So and I wanted to devote this month’s “How I Wear My” to straw, a material that turns up in so many summer accessories.

Let’s start things off with my stylish How I Wear My partner, Jill!

“I am at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, one of my favorite places in NYC, with the trusty J. Crew straw tote I purchased several years ago. This has held up so well and every summer I look forward to pulling it out of my closet and carrying it from June through September.”

“I brought a few colorful straw accessories with me on a trip I took to Capri, Italy recently including a red-to-pink ombre fringed straw tote and a packable straw hat with a turquoise blue band. I wore them with my favorite caftan.”

“I love straw hats and bags, especially for vacays to warm weather spots. I live in Seattle- where it rains cats and dogs most months. There’s not much opportunity to wear straw anything, only on a scarecrow in your backyard! I was in Vegas when I scored this hat and bag at a tradeshow. I was so excited they both matched perfectly with the navy dress I just purchased on The Strip! Straw is naturally the best choice to compliment outfits, when the temperatures climb.”

“I’m a big fan of fedoras and Panama hats so I thought I’d get another for the summer and chose this straw sailor-style hat. It’s the perfect throw-it-on hat for bad hair days, super sunny days (not that we saw many of those this year in the UK!) and finishing off just about any summer outfit.”

“I love straw hats with a wide brim. Unfortunately, they are not as versatile as a straw fedora. Wide brim straw hats ask for a summer dress. They look great with the eternal American classic white summer dress and a pop of color. Here I went for orange as it is more unexpected than red.”

“I embellished this oversized wicker tote with oversized pom poms. The skirt is Anthro.”

“An Old Navy Favourite today and an outfit often on repeat last year. All three pieces are last year’s stock.  The Comverse and necklace are also not new to me nor the blog but pieces I really love. It all goes so well together as a fun summer outfit. The straw Fedora is also a fave and I am never without one in warm weather.”

“When I think of straw items I think of things made in the islands and faraway lands. But this great straw hat is #madeinUSA by Eric Javits and there are actually many other wonderful options at I wore a hat almost every day this summer to avoid sun overexposure. This visor style was in heavy rotation with a beach cover up like this fun aqua eyelet dress #MadeinUSA by Jordan Taylor and my trusty Kala Eyewear sunnies”

“I am wearing my thrifted straw hat, thrifted shorts, thrifted sunnies and jewelry by Kendra Scott.”

“This summer was the first that I began wearing hats and I have to say that I sported a straw hat nearly every day that I spent out in the sun. I love the shade provided and the mystery created by a great hat. This outfit was beach ready with my straw cloche hat, my orange tassel tunic, and fun tote bag. These sandals also have a straw sole.  They are terribly uncomfortable though and were featured in my Bad Buy Book series co-hosted with Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style.”

“This straw hat is from Old Navy and I’ve worn it non-stop this summer. Sad to put it away.”

“I love a straw bag in the summer time and this gold straw clutch has been such a winner! A $10 thrifted piece, it’s the perfect size and color to balance out all my flowy summer pieces.”

“This hat carries such fun memories! Last summer (2016)  we spent a week in Amsterdam, and the lovely Greetje of No Fear of Fashion invited us for a canal tour on her husband Ron’s boat, and brought along her jaunty Panama hat for me to borrow. Well she liked how it looked on me better than her, and sent it home with me! I’ve worn it in lovely gardens, on sunny beaches, at al fresco lunches, but the best time was on the boat with Greetje and Ron.”

“A recent addition to my wardrobe is this straw sun visor that I wore for a recent harbor boating excursion. My hair is too big for me to comfortably wear a hat so I make do with sun visors and I adore how well this straw one fits in with any sunny day outfit.”

“This is one of my favorite summer outfits. I wore flared jeans with an off shoulder top and carried the latest addition to my bag collection and a favorite. I guess this bag was really popular in the late 70s and 80s but I missed it then. It is a Bamboo Ark bag by Cult Gaia.”

“This Panama hat from Montecristi Panama Hats of Napa Valley is my all time favorite summer hat.”

“I wore my straw hat with a Stella Carakasi tunic from 2014 (similar) and my new skinny jeans from Gap. I kept my outfit casual with black leather espadrilles and my sporty Apple Watch. I love this hat because it goes with just about any summery outfit, hides a bad hair day and protects my face and my hair and scalp from the sun.”

Thank you to all the stylish participants this month! Jill and I love your straw looks.

For October we are going to paint the town red! Red never goes out of style, of course, but it is one of the colors of the season this year and whether you wear it head-to-toe or prefer dashes of it to embolden your outfit, we want to see how you style it for early fall. So join us for “How I Wear My: Red Hot.”

Send photos to us at by October 2, 2017 and be sure to include a description of your look, which we will use directly in our posts.

Ha! I was actually thinking we’d get some straw jewelry or shoes…I do have a friend who has these huge straw bangles that are awesome. A straw dress would be quite interesting! I love your huge pom pom bag, Suzanne. You have such a great eye for style!

Everyone looks great – something about straw that makes you feel like you’re on vacation. I love straw bags with sweaters, jeans and boots too – it’s a fun and laid back contrast.
