Seven for Saturday

Seven for Saturday

Welcome to the weekend! Time for this week’s Seven for Saturday ☀️

1 – Heatwave

With the tragic and horrifying week Texas and Houston have experienced due to Hurricane Harvey, I will not complain about the heatwave we’re having here in Northern California. We are just rolling with it by trying to stay out of the sun as much as possible and hydrating. Temps have been soaring above 110 in parts of Sonoma County and San Francisco broke the record for an all time high of 104 yesterday!

We are so grateful to have air conditioning. We bring our two big dogs inside as much as we can during the heatwave but they do get restless after awhile. So we dragged our kiddie pool out to the driveway and threw a doggie pool party. Our black lab and Golden Retriever love the play in the water. Even our little old Yorkies get in on the fun!

We have a few more days of high heat ahead of us, then the temperatures drop into the 80s, thankfully. I am ready for fall weather. How about you?

2 – Birthday Plans Coming Together

I mentioned in my last Seven for Saturday post that my 50th birthday plans have changed and I am headed to France next month. So excited! I have booked the Paris portion of our trip. I came across this apartment located in Le Marais neighborhood, which is my favorite area in Paris. Once I saw it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Based on the high reviews and the reasonable rates, we decided to go for it and booked four nights here. Isn’t it dreamy?

We also booked a room with at Hotel La Comtesse after a friend recommended it. I am excited to wake up on my birthday and start 50 with a view of the Eiffel Tower!

The rest of the trip is up in the air. Right now I am deciding whether to spend several days in Northern France to see Mont Saint-Michel, Bayeux tapestry, D-Day Beaches, Honfleur and Giverny. Or head south to Lyon, then Provence. We don’t have time for both. I am elated to even be considering these as choices and I can’t go wrong no matter what we do. I continue to research and ask friends but need to make a decision soon.

Have you traveled to these regions in France? Your advice is welcomed and appreciated!

3 – Current Read

I have tried all summer long to find a book I could really dive in to and enjoy. The last two were disappointing enough that I gave up on both of them midway. While browsing our local bookstore for travel book about Paris and France, I came across this novel.

I am only a few pages into the book, but so far, I adore it and I think it’s going to make me even more excited than I already am, if that’s possible.

4 –  A Beautiful One-of-a-Kind Gift

This week I met my friend Elizabeth for lunch in Sonoma. We became friends last spring when I discovered her beautiful jewelry at an event. We have hit it off and I so enjoy her company. She gave me the most gorgeous necklace at lunch and I am crazy about it!

I love how the big Fireball pearl is so uniquely shaped. No two Fireball pearls are alike! And I can wear the necklace at many different lengths. This one is coming to France with me for sure!

5 – TSA Pre ✔️

Scrolling through Facebook the other day, I came across a post from a friend who got her TSA Pre Check done at our regional airport this week. This is something Bill and I have been meaning to do for a long time but we didn’t want to drive three to four hours round trip to the San Francisco airport to make it happen.

Bill and I filled out the forms online then decided we would try a walk-in on Friday since the first available appointment was so far out. We did have to wait awhile – about 30 to 40 minutes – but it was still far less time consuming than driving to SFO. I believe the mobile TSA RV will be at Sonoma County airport for the next 9 or so days.

While the TSA Pre Check will help us while flying in and out of the U.S., it won’t help us when we’re outside of the country. So when we go to France, we will be able use it leaving San Francisco but not when we return. We would need a Global Entry Pass which takes 7 months to process.

Identigo has several Mobile Enrollment RVs. There may be one coming to an airport near you!

6 – Garden Party

We are wine club members at Beltane Ranch, about 5 miles down the road from our home. We love spending time at this family-owned and family-operated winery, inn, ranch, and vineyard and we rarely miss their events.

They have the best wine club parties, in my opinion. Last Sunday, we went to their wine pick-up party that took place in their large garden. They had live music, wine and nibbles and guests could pick produce from the garden and orchard. What a treat! We came home with tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, peaches, plums, onions, cucumbers and more! We also bought a couple of their cute hats.

7 – Stella Carakasi Grand Opening Event

Stella Carakasi’s Grand Opening party at their new boutique on Fourth Street in Berkeley happened last weekend. What a gorgeous space they have designed! It’s modern and chic with beautiful dressing rooms, lots of stunning clothing and accessories and it’s in such a great shopping district.

I had a chance to catch up with my friends at Stella Carakasi, Yarra and Marlena.

I’ve got some new pieces from Stella’s Early Fall 2017 Collection to show you next week. In the meantime, be sure to browse their end-of-the-season flash sale, happening now. I love this series. The apartment in Paris is fantastic looking – very cool. And love your leather and pearl necklace too.

Isn’t it a beautiful apartment? Bill is not very excited about it being on the 5th floor with no elevator but I think it will be worth the effort.
Hope your recent trip to Europe was wonderful! xo

You can check back over and over again on the global pass website to see if another time slot comes up–people cancel all the time. Probably tougher at SFO that where I live in the DC area where there are three locations within 55 miles. I was able to get in within a matter of weeks earlier this year at BWI (it took 5 minutes for the review). But I will say, when I returned to the US, I was in and out of IAD (not just Customs/Immig., but the terminal and into a waiting car) in roughly 20-25 minutes after the mobile lounge pulled up to the terminal. (The mobile lounge is an old Dulles feature that brings arrivals from outlying terminals to the main one–the only way to get to it from Intl flights.) And, Dulles can be a notoriously tough place to get through customs, etc., I’ve waited 1-2 hours in the past, so it was totally worth the effort. Have a wonderful trip to France. A great way to celebrate a milestone.

I am disappointed we didn’t think to do the Global Entry Pass when we renewed our passports several months ago. I will be traveling domestically in a few weeks so I can use the TSA Pre check then but I am not sure it will help us in the US. We fly Air France direct from SFO to Paris. I think it might not help with non-US airlines but Air France is a Delta brand so maybe? I guess we will find out. Thanks for the great information. The idea of getting in and out of the airport upon landing after a long haul flight sounds heavenly!

One more tip–David Lebovitz – if you don’t already follow him–he is an expat living in Paris, originally from SF, who has written several books and who gives all sorts of tips on places in Paris as well as recipes (including bakeries-like the one in today’s post). He is a chef, after all.

      Hi Mary,

Yes! I used to be a daily reader of David’s blog and own a couple of his books. I actually had the chance to meet him when he was visiting a chocolate factory in the East Bay. My husband and I are big fans of French baked treats so I will be sure to check out his latest post.
Thank you for the info, Mary! I haven’t been by to see what David’s up to in ages. A
