One trend two generations Mothers Day

Today I am sharing a special Mother’s Day edition of the One Trend, Two Generations series I have been doing with my stepdaughter, Tori, for the last few years.

I am a stepmother to her and her two older siblings, Kayla and Ryan. All three are now in their twenties. I have been in their lives since Tori was 4-years-old. How time flies!

They have always sweetly acknowledged me on Mother’s Day as one of their parents and this Mother’s Day is no different. We are celebrating today, Saturday, so that they could be with their mother on Sunday, as they should be.

Tori and I were planning on another One Trend, Two Generations post featuring off-the-shoulder tops and thought Mother’s Day weekend would be the ideal time for this kind of post!

Tori happened to be housesitting for our friends, Michelle and Bill, who live in an absolutely darling house in Sonoma. They have two cute little black poodles – Murphy and Finnegan – who got along surprisingly well with my Yorkies, Daisy and Coco.

We had a great time playing catch, taking photos, swinging on the porch swing, laying in the hammock, riding around on Michelle’s cute bike and just enjoying their charming Wine Country home.

Tori and I had our outfits planned out until Tori, who had just washed and dried her off-the-shoulder dress by Band of Gypsies, discovered it shrank so much in the length, she couldn’t wear it anymore.

So I had her wear my off-the-shoulder top that I just got at Gap and I wore her dress as a top.

It all worked out in the end but we’re both sad the dress shrank because it was so adorable on her. My Gap top looked pretty darn cute on her too!

Kayla, Tori’s older sister, just happened to be wearing blue as well when she came over for a visit. Although it looks like we planned that, we real didn’t!

I love the off-the-shoulder trend. I think it’s a great way to add a bit of sexiness to your look – no matter what your generation – without showing too much skin.

The only down side for me is having to wear a strapless bra. I really don’t think there is such a thing as a comfortable strapless bra. That might be an oxymoron. I can only wear this trend as long as I can stand the discomfort!

I am very fortunate, not having kids of my own, to have three wonderful stepkids. I am proud and grateful I was able to have a small hand in raising these now adults and am happy to call them special friends.

If you are celebrating this weekend, I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

And Happy Mother’s Day to my own mother. Many miles separate us but we are together in spirit.

It’s been a long time since my stepdaughter, Tori, and I have gotten together for a One Trend, Two Generations post.

We were inspired to put one together when we received the latest arrivals to Shop The Rich Life: Cashmere Blend Everyday Ponchos.

Even though we didn’t have Tori’s dad – who has since returned from the fires after a 17-day assignment (hurray!) – here to take our photos, we still managed to get some pictures with the help of a tripod and a lot of tries!

These ponchos are made in Nepal and designed by my friend, Casey of Mason Street Designs. You may remember Casey and her Luxe Wrap ponchos from last year. I wore them here and here and I featured Casey in my Women in Business Holiday Gift Guide.

Made from 90% cashmere and 10% wool, these ponchos are reasonably priced, lack the tendency to pill like 100% cashmere often will, and make the ideal layering piece for fall and winter.

Tori and I each selected the ponchos we wanted to style. First, Tori chose the Slit Neck cable knit version in Heather gray.

She styled it with black high-waisted cut-off shorts and Converse sneakers. It’s an edgy, casual look perfect for a 20-year-old!

I chose the V-Neck poncho, also in the cable knit pattern, in Charcoal gray. I wore my poncho with my favorite white jeans by J. Crew and black D’orsay flats from Banana Republic. I layered it with a basic black tank top and accessorized with a leather wrap cuff.

We decided to take some photos inside too so we could play around with my new home photo studio, which is still a work in progress. Tori wore the beautiful Cornflower blue V-Neck poncho with a stunning Janet Harrer necklace (coming soon to the shop!). It’s such a vibrant and flattering blue shade.

The V can be worn as Tori wears it here, or slid over to one side for a different look, moving the longest part of the poncho off to the side.

I love the way the poncho looks from the back as well as the front. I am a big fan of asymmetric lines and always find myself drawn to them.

For Tori’s third look, she wore the black Cashmere Blend Everyday Poncho with a felted wool boho hat from Montecristi Panama Hats of Napa Valley, distressed denim and a Michal Golan Evil Eye necklace.

For my second look, I chose the Slit Neck poncho in Winter White. This may be my favorite poncho of the group. I just love winter white!

I wore Gap Always Skinny jeans and my “Valentino-on-a-budget” shoes (no longer available but here is a similar pair).

Tori added black booties to her look for an edgy vibe…

and I kept thing simple and ladylike with a gorgeous Janet Harrer South Sea Pearl necklace.
