This edition of “How I Wear My” marks our third anniversary of the series! Jill of Everything Just So and I can hardly believe it! When we learned traditional third year anniversary gifts included leather (traditional) or crystal or glass (modern), we could not resist turning those materials into our theme for November. Whether you are a first-time participant or a regular contributor, we raise our glasses and toast all of you who make “How I Wear My” so much fun! Thank you!
Jill of Everything Just So starts us off, as always. You may recall this vintage Volvo that she posed with for “HIWM: Pastel” last June. She came across this classic ride while out for a photo shoot and could not resist featuring the car again.
She’s wearing a faux leather jacket by Matix, a red sequin sweater by L’Wren Scott for Banana Republic and a tie blouse by 212 Collection. Jill loves the color combination of the blue faux leather paired with the red sequins.
Gracey of Fashion for Giants wears pleather leggings by Long Tall Sally with an oversized Free People sweater and Splendid boots for an edgy yet comfy looking fall look.
Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo Style Files turns up the heat in a red leather skirt she picked up at a thrift store and a red clutch she found at an estate sale. The combo of red and leopard is always striking, especially on Suzanne!
Susan of Une Femme d’un Certain Age shows us her gorgeous loden leather jacket from Vince that she bought last spring on sale. Now that Los Angeles weather has finally cooled down, she’s ready to start wearing it again!
Cynthia of My Rose Colored Shades typically wears her leather as accessories. She’s always been drawn to tan colored belts, bags and shoes because she loves the naturally worn look that comes from wear and tear.
Susan of High Heels in the Wilderness wears stunning leather pants that were her “investment purchase” last fall. She takes every opportunity to wear them that she can. They are narrow in the leg without being tight, and the seam at the knee makes them easy to move around in and adds a bit of interest. She loves them with a long blazer and tee shirt but she especially like to wear them with this gray Vince sweater.
Alice of Happiness at Mid-Life says this about her look:
“This outfit has both leather and crystals. I used to be so afraid of leather due to care but now with the improvements in fabric faux leather is so easy to wear and take care of. This is my favorite way to add some fun to any outfit – with a jeweled belt. The belt & blazer is from The Limited, dress from the Loft and faux leather heels from Target.”
Cheryl of Northwest Mountain Living is wearing a red leather jacket with sparkly jewelry. She found her gorgeous jacket at a consignment shop and loved the color. She says the jewelry is fun to wear with just about anything. She wears the jacket and jewelry with a soft black t-shirt, boot cut jeans and leopard booties.
Tamera of Tamera Beardsley wears a jaw-droppingly beautiful crystal vintage necklace with her leather jacket for a fun and fresh high-low effect. She says, “Whether I pair the crystal and leather with jeans or a maxi dress, the look is always eclectic and modern.”
Malia of Style by Malia is really in to leather right now so when she saw this faux leather peplum vest, she had to have it. She paired it with red plaid joggers and heeled sandals. The entire look is from Ashley Stewart.
Trina of Tea Time With Trina wears a leather pencil skirt with a little crystal necklace. She says, “This is a look that can be casual enough for everyday wear and yet by adding the crystal necklace, I’m set for a dinner date as well!”
Helen of Valley of the Shoes wears her newest motorcycle jacket (this is jacket #4!) from Madewell. The deep saturated wine color is what sold her on this beautiful leather jacket. It pairs well with so many colors and prints, like leopard, already in her closet and she says she can’t get enough of the moto/biker look, whether it’s jackets or boots. It’s classic with an attitude!
Nora of Jacket Society wears a Vertigo cape jacket with Kenneth Cole faux leather leggings and tan sweater top, her beautiful Moschino scarf and Prada bag.
Dawn Lucy of Fashion Should Be Fun says, “I am wearing a plaid and moto combo this month with a black suede moto jacket and a vintage wool plaid scarf around my neck. Check out the fun sneakers too!”
Nicole of High Latitude Style says:
“Growing up in Germany I had a red suede Bavarian style short Lederhose. The big advantage of the Lederhose was that I could slit down sandhills, dig in the dirt and run thru the bushes without getting into trouble with my mom. My dad just had to brush the Lederhose to look clean again. It may be this experience or in the genes (my dad loved leather clothes too) that I love “leather everything”. Yep, I have to admit I am still dreaming about owning a leather gown like Angelina Jolie, but one day in a blue moon I will have one! Anyhow. This photo shows the newest addition to my leather collection. A Lederhosentuerle leather skirt. It is basically the skirt version of a Lederhose. I have to admit I bought it as a streetstyle fun piece, and guess what, it turns heads whenever I show up in it somewhere here on the top of the world. I hope you like it as much as I do or at least think it is funny.”
Sandy, a reader, says she has always wanted to take part in this series, but somehow never did. She says, “So, here I am with my submission, finally!” She wears her Bandolino leather boots in this photo and says they are her fall and winter staple. She loves the rich brown color and the color blocking. The boots go with most of her outfits from jeans to dresses! Very versatile.
Sheree of It’s Not That Deep wears a big gray scarf. as a top with a large leather cognac belt she found in a thrift shop and leather shoes by Chloe. Her pants from Zara.
Madeco of Al Fils des Jours tells us:
“For November, my choice is clear : jean, faux-fur jacket (homemade, as I love sewing!) and one of my favorite necklaces from Zara. It was my birthday gift last year. In fact, it was a special gift to myself, after foot surgery. Let it shine!”
Catherine of Not Dressed as Lamb says this about her look:
“After publishing two posts on ways to style a leather biker jacket, I wanted to recreate one of the older outfits I’d featured (biker jacket worn with with military-style trousers). When I got my my winter clothes out of storage I rediscovered the gorgeous white lace sweater I got this spring. I knew the two of them (plus biker jacket) were destined to be worn together this autumn.”
Ana of Mrs. American Made shows us a jacket that features bits of black leather. sparingly added. It is also #madeinUSA and by Nanette Lepore. She has worn it with a pair of classic and very basic jeans, a white t-shirt, a fabulous vintage patent bag and a statement necklace by David Aubrey.
Linda of Labour of Life wears her favorite leather blazer with a floral skirt, burgundy hat and a plaid scarf. Linda says that leather just pulls an outfit together. I agree!
For my How I Wear My: Leather, Crystal or Glass look, I wore my new Ada wrap belt with a plaid shirtdress from Old Navy. The dress already has a string-tie waist but I thought the dress could use a little more definition in the waist, so I added the wrap belt and simply tucked the drawstring behind it.
Also made of leather are my tall boots that I bought in Venice, Italy a few years ago. And since glass is part of this month’s theme, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to wear one of my most versatile pieces of jewelry: a glass bracelet. My husband bought this bracelet for me at an art gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon about ten years ago. It has remained one of my most-cherished pieces all these many years.
I topped my look off with a wool felt hat from Montecristi Panama Hats of Napa Valley. I wore this outfit last weekend while out selecting this year’s holiday tree with my husband. It’s Bill’s favorite time of year and he likes to have a wide selection of trees to choose from, so we usually pick out our tree the first day the tree farm opens. We didn’t bring it home yet, thankfully, but it has been purchased and reserved.
I want to take a moment, on this third anniversary of How I Wear My, to thank my lovely and very dedicated partner and friend, Jill of Everything Just So for her flexibility, excellent writing skills (Jill writes all the opening and closing paragraphs and handles the HIWM Facebook page). And above all else, I want to thank her for her treasured friendship. Thank you, Jill! Who would have thought that we would stay at this so long?
I also want to thank the dozens upon dozens of wonderful and stylish people who have participated in How I Wear My over the years. Without you, this series surely would have ended a long, long time ago. Jill and I always look forward to seeing what you send in and we love meeting so many new people from all over the globe!
